The two tools for fixing it when it is screwed up that they referred to are fixboot and bootcfg. They can both be run from the WinXP recovery console (i.e. boot from the WinXP CD).

Fixboot can write a new MBR:

Bootcfg (using "bootcfg /rebuild") can scan the disks for Windows partition and rebuild the boot.ini file:
