If it does this repeatedly (like, every time), then it means your partition table is toast. For most folks, that would also mean it's time to reinitialize the drive from scratch, and then re-download (or "re-upload" for windows users ) all the tunes again.

Cheers

Don't let Mark panic you. Usually this error is caused by cable problems. Please contact carsupport@riohome.com for help.

I got the same thing recently, it recognizes the hard drives, however it complains about reading the superblock, haven't heard back from support yet, here's my hyperterminal session.

03:05 is kernel-speak for /dev/hda5, which you may notice is missing from the partition check line for hda -- hda5 and hda6 should normally appear between the angle brackets < >.

So this would imply a corrupt or improperly constructed boot sector (partition table) on the drive.

If your two drives are 100% identical, and were both properly made with the same version of player software/upgrade/whatever, then you might be able to fix it by simply copying the boot sector from the second drive (hdb) to the first drive (hda).

I will not include instructions here for that, lest too many fools blow away their music collections.

Cheers

EDIT: your two drive are NOT 100% identical.. did you bugger it up the master/slave or drive to drive copies?

Actually, you may also be able to fix it (maybe) by reapplying an empeg upgrade, say the latest v2beta11 or v1.03 .upgrade file.

hmmm, well I'm not sure what all changed, here's a list of the events leading up to when I knew it was screwed.

it was in the car, everything was good, took it inside put on another new boot animation (I don't remember if it fully booted or if I pulled the power after I saw the boot animation) then took it to the car, while walking to the car, the strap on my case broke and fell to the ground, only from my hip into the grass, I think that the laptop hit first, the empeg didn't actually physically hit the ground, only the G shock. put it in the car, then it was stuck at boot logo.

took it iside got the shell messages, re-applied the beta-11 upgrade hoping to fix it, upgrade went ok, didn't fix it though. also, as you can imagine I am unable to get to a shell prompt within the empeg either, it's really no big deal for me to format and wipe the disks to rebuild the partitions correctly (it's only time) but I wanted to make sure that I couldn't just replace the cable if that was the problem so I wouldn't have to go through all the hassle.

still waiting on support though.

seems to me that it probably isn't the cable since it does recognize the drives alright, it just can't see the partitions or read the superblock on hda.

is it possible that I made the boot animation too long and it overwrote something? I don't remember how many frames it was exactly but I could figure out if that was even a remote possibility.

if a disk builder to wipe out the disks and a re-upgrade and re-sync would fix it, then I'll start tonight, but I would have rather avoided it if it was only the cable, doesn't sound like it though.

eli

EDIT: yeah the two drives are not identical, I did the drive upgrade as per the instructions, and everything has been running great for a long while with both drives in there, slave/masters are proper. maybe some of the steps I listed up to the fault will help.

The boot animation will not affect any of this -- might cause it to fail to load the kernel, but I believe JEmplode currently limits animations to 64KB or less -- way to small to even touch the kernel.

yep, I reseated the cable, no result, tried plugging in only one drive, no result. I wish support would get back to me, because if it's just a matter of putting on a disk builder and re-downloading all the music, then I could have had that done this weekend.

w00t!!! don't have a clue what happened, but I decided to try to put on the .upgrade file again, and now it works, not sure why it still wouldn't see the partitions after the first time I upgraded but oh well, this would have been nice to gotten taken care of when it happened on friday, before my 5 hour drive to dallas, and my 5 hour drive from dallas, oh well, it works now, and the laptop provided music for about 4 hours of the trip.
