I am attempting to upgrade my Riomk2a with a new HDD. When I use the MK2 Builder I get the message" couldn't find pump" ox20 and when I run hyperterm it just loops "forever hold their peace" over and over. So what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Mostly likely causes are disk drive (or cable or IDE header) trouble, or problems with the serial cable or serial port.

Just in case, triple-check and make absolutely sure you're following the instructions in the disk upgrade guide TO THE LETTER.

Perhaps post here exactly what you're doing, right down to the keystrokes and mouse clicks, and then report exactly what you see on the screen.

Sounds like an "off by one" cable plugging issue, or the drive is not jumpered as Master. Also, the builder is only really useful on drives under 40G.

To follow up on what I posted earlier the hdd is a 100 gb Seagate and I have Triple checked everything and have followed the disk upgrade to the T. I have went and installed V2.01-final developer version because I saw someone else had the same problem as me and that worked for them however it hasn't for me and this is the message I get with hyperterm when I try and run Emplode

Question: did you build the drive first? Also, there is a bug with the builder utility where it can fail to build the music partition but gives no indication. You might want to try rebuilding.

Yes Paul I did build the drive first and I have tried rebuilding at least six times now so perhaps it is the builder and not me. I have had success in the past building this drive but I needed to use it as extra storage and now I am ready to put it back in the Empeg and now this. Oh well maybe I'll just keep trying and get lucky maybe I won't, we shall see. Thanks for the reply Paul.

hdd is a 100 gb Seagate

Builder is known to have problems sometimes with hard drives >60 GB. Could this be the root of the trouble?

Well I have my doubts about the 100 GB Seagate being the cause because I just tried to format a 40 GB Seagate and I get the same pump error. I do believe that the ".upgrade" file is corrupted and if that's the case how do I upgrade the disk?

Greetings!

Please rebuild the drive using the builder routine. But I want you to reupload the builder firmware to the player. Immediately after the upload completes and the player starts to reboot, yank the power from the empeg. Rig your computer to do a hyperterm capture and plug the empeg back in. Capture the build session boot. Please note, you will likely be prompted to hit "enter" to continue the boot process if there is anything already on the drive. Note any errors and post the capture here. Once the build completes and you go into the disk check, reboot the player and post the boot log here as well.

Thanks!

thans for the reply Paul. I have tried rebuiling the drive as per your instructions and I have noticed that after an attemped rebuild and getting the "couldn't get pump error" the player just sits there looking dead and doesn't reboot itself. I have however pulled the plug immediately after getting the message ran hyperterminal plugged in the player and this is the message I get:

I don't know if this tidbit of info will help but I do have a working 20 GB HDD. I don't know if there is anyway to take what's on the 20GB and put it on the 40GB to make it work?

Hmmm... That usually means the kernel is bad. Can you download a fresh copy of 2.0 developer, attempt to load that and see what happens. Once that kernel is loaded (the .upload file, please), we can work with the 20 to build the 100 manually.

Ah. Good. You are able to get into the player, and have enough of developer to work with.

The easiest approach is to install a known good bootable drive in as the master drive, reconfigure (add a jumper) to the new 100GB drive to make it a slave drive, boot with both in place. You should (after possible errors) get to where you can get to a command prompt. From there, you should be able to follow the directions for a manual partition and format.

I think it may be partially there, just obscured by the hyperterm capture. There is a "hdb: ST9100823A, ATA DISK drivep pr" in that boot, as Mark saw.

Can you capture another boot log? Use the capture to a file feature instead of selecting / cut&paste. The results are much clearer. If, as I think, you have both drives recognized, it should just be a matter of manually partitioning and formatting the 100GB drive.

I did not think it worked because when I ran emplode after the partition it still only showed a 20 gb hdd perhaps it's a mistake on emplodes part. Thanks Paul and thanks Mark I greatly appreciate it!

Mmm.. that would mean the music partition has not been "formatted" -- or rather, nobody has successfully run mke2fs on it yet.

It does sound like it was partitioned, but not formatted. Did you follow the directions on both links in that posting? They went to different procedures.

But when you reboot, it only shows one drive??? That is extremely strange. Can you take a look at this FAQ entry for setting up (and more specifically capturing text with) hyperterm? I would like to get a capture of a clean boot log. Thanks.

Please exit to shell, and let me know what the following does. I suspect that you may have partitioned and formatted the music file system on the 100GB, but not added the directory structure...

q (get to shell)
ls /drive0
ls /drive1

Meanwhile, what is your prefered end configuration? Do you want to have this player with a 20GB master and 100GB slave? Do you want to transfer everything from the 20 to the 100? Do you want to have the 100 alone as a boot drive? This will determine how / if you need to copy audio and configuration files, and if you need to move drives around and apply a .upgrade file...

I was going to try and keep the 20gb as the master and the 100 as a slave but at this point it doesn't matter I would just like to get the 100gb working and I did try and apply an upgrade file after the partiton and format to the 100gb and run it alone but it hung up in Emplode. So I would say at this point Paul whatever is the eaisest thing to do is fine!

Now I have entered q and
Is /drive0
Is /drive1
and this is what hyperterminal says:
q
Restored terminal settings
Remounting first music partition read-only
Remounting second music partition read-only
Player exited normally: 0
Switching to shell-player loop
Starting bash.
empeg:/empeg/bin# ls /drive0
fids lost+found var
empeg:/empeg/bin# ls /drive1
lost+found
empeg:/empeg/bin#

Well, easiest is to keep the 20 as master and 100 as slave, given this is the way it is already wired / jumpered / configured.

Any results from that "ls /drive1"? I suspect that the directory structure that the player relies on (/driveX/fids) is not there on the 100...

EDIT: Ah. I see you posted while I was replying. Yup. That is the problem. Do this:

rw ; rwm
mkdir /drive1/fids
rom ; ro
reboot empeg
test.
