Greetings,

Is there a setting to get the RIO to output mono? I will be using it to drive a PA system for a wedding, so I presume it requires a mono input. Has anyone done anything similar?

Thanx
-Ted

I've wondered this too. I don't think you can. I think you just have download mono mp3's.

When i've done this I found it easiest to use one channel of a two channel mixer, the sort that are readily and cheaply available for mixing video soundtracks. I don't think that you can do it with the Empeg/Rio.

Of course, if it's a wedding the chances it'll be heard over the din are remote, maybe you should give them LH for the first half of the day and RH for the rest!

There is a thread under this subject:
Stereo Bleed and Joint Stereo
that may help you.

Huh?

Stereo Bleed doesn't create a proper mono signal and Joint Stereo is to do with MP3 encoding...

thanks.. that was my backup plan: to use a mixer. I'll need an input for the mic anyways. i sure hope nothing goes wrong with the RIO during the wedding!

Most good mixers will have the ability to do a stereo line level input somewhere. It is a common thing. I wouldn't worry about running it in mono.

At worst, you could take two channels on the mixer, and pan one full left and the other full right. Assuming that you had the proper plugs and adapters.

I've heard that ground loops tend to crop up a lot easier when plugging an empeg into a mixer, so be prepared to have to deal with that. Which AC adapter do you have?

Could you use a Y cable out of the empeg? Basically sum the outputs in one cable.
If you're using a mixer, set each channel's pan to center and take either the left of right output to the PA

Looks like I need to do a dry run, I hadnt thought about the ground loop problem. I will try all the suggestions. Tony, are there different AC adaptors out there which are more succeptible to ground loops? I have a small and thin AC adaptor that came with the unit.

Thanks

Arrgghhh... Noooo. This is a really bad idea - unless both outputs are outputting exactly the same signal exactly in phase, they will be trying to drive each other across a low impedance wire, leading to excessive currents that could damage the empeg. (And if the 2 outputs were outputting identical signals, then you wouldn't need to bother anyway - just use either one)

That's the one that's rumored to be less suceptible to the problem, I think, so you could be good to go.

If you wind up needing to buy a mixer, take a look at this . I got mine for about $85 I like it because it is small (it sits on my desk to mix the soundcard output from 3 computers). They also have a less expensive 6-channel model.
