tried to upload an own logo for my image pan,
I can see it in my browser, it's there.
Then i tried to look at the visiual but my empeg stopped (hangs up)
It does NOT respond to: serial, ethernet or usb.
I can press every knob on the front, and I still get no response.
it doesn't even boot anymore, only the small led in the right top corner is flashing as if i just turned off the ignition in my car.
all this is in AC mode (in home)

I figured I should upload the kernel again, but since either emplode, Jemplode or logoedit can't find any player, I don'y know how.

Please help me out here?
Regards, John

Hmmm. IIRC the image.raw is limited in size to max 64k... But for me the hijack ftp was still working, so no trouble changing the picture back...
What does the serial port have to say on boot?

Assuming correct settings in hyperterminal (115k2, 8, none, 1, no handshake),
what is printed in Hyperterminal if you reboot/powercycle the player?

Hardware test looks fine...

For me with the > 64k image, the empeg booted OK, but upon starting the player hung when it tried to get the Image Pan picture.

If you don't have to many mods made to the system, try applying the 2.0b11 .upgrade file again. That should always work. If not then something is wrong with your serial port, its settings, the cable, or there's a hardware fault in the empeg...

I don't see anything odd either

practicly the same thing here.

The only mod I have made so far is the background for the annavu, that worked fine.
I indeed tried to upload the firmware again, but none of the programs can find any empeg, only hyperterminal does. but hyperterminal gives me a connection timeout while trying to send any file. ;(
How would there be a problem with my serial cable/settings when i can see the boot procedure?
And I find it hard to believe that this is a hardware fault.
Any suggestions?

Well, the reflash code is tucked away in PROM IIRC, so that shouldn't be affected by whatever you do to the player or kernel.

If Hyperterminal can find the player, then the Rio Upgrade Wizard should work if you pick the right serial port...

If your player locks up after trying to edit the Image Pan visual, odds are that you did one of the following things:

1) Named it wrong. The name is case-sensitive and must be in all lower case. If you name it with an upper case file extension or something, the player will lock up completely and you have to reload the software.

2) Did not set the file permissions properly after sending the file to the player.

3) Did not create the file correctly. For instance, the Image Pan visual must be RLE-compressed, while the Anna Vu backdrop must not.

These are all mentioned in the FAQ already, but not under their own separate entry. I will create that entry now.

4) It's bigger than 64k

At least that was the impression I got when I was playing with the images... Since I had Hijack installed I could ftp in and swap back to the original file without problems.

Are we sure about this one? Can we get any hard data on this?

I would like to include this in the FAQ entry, but I want to make that information accurate before posting it.

If the limit is 64k, is that the uncompressed size when it plays back in the player's memory, or the compressed size of the RLE-encoded file? Is there a pixel width/height limit, too?

OK... doesn't look like it's a 64k limit after all... Just worked my way up to 218k size (compressed, .raw) of 2048x2048 pixels without problems (using the same image in increasing sizes) and that's a far as I feel like going right now...

Can't see why my previous attempts failed though - those images were smaller in both dimensions (XxY), compressed file size (IIRC 64 to ~80k large) and about the same complexity.

I think it's time to call for Toby: visuals

If you install Hijack you can overwrite the non-working image via ftp...

When I played around now, I had a ftp session up as well as a terminal. Used ftp to upload the test images, the terminal to redo the empeg.raw softlink pointing to the appropriate file stored in a /empeg/lib/visuals/esher folder as well as stopping and restarting the player.
