What exactly is the HIJACK program and what does it do, and for that matter what the heck is LOJACK. I looked at the FAQ's but I didn't find any BASIC info on it. I'm new at this i've only had my RIO CAR for 3 weeks or so . I am running beta 2.11 on my player if that matters to help tell me about HIJACK

thanks
Shawn

Hijack is a patch to the player software. When installed, it gives you a bunch of new features, mainly accessible by holding down the rotary knob. The functions are those listed in the faq or in Mark Lord's site. Some of them are just amazingly useful, like remapping IR codes so that you can use virtyally EVERY IR remote control on Earth, http and ftp servers to access your empeg via lan or the internet, and many many many many others. Definitely, give it a try, you'll love it!

More basic than this? Just ask!

Click on the Hijack link (top right of this BBS page) and the site will tell you more about what it is.

You read the Hijack FAQ? The second entry reads as follows:

---------
Hijack is a hacked kernel written by Mark Lord that adds a host of new features to the empeg/RioCar. It includes Richard Lovejoy's VolAdj hack, IR translation so you can use third party remotes and remap buttons, a game, a built-in FTP and HTTP server, Christian Hack's v1.0 DelayTime hack (as of v201), Brian Mihulka's lighted button hack (as of v202), an easy way to attach other userland apps, and a bunch of additional features accessible through it's own menu system.
---------

I want the FAQ to explain exactly what you are wanting to know... so any advice on how to make it more "basic" is appreciated.

Lojack is a remote control and display application (via http) that gives you two
small freestanding windows after accessing the launch.html page; one for the
empeg face and one for the remote (see attached image). It is very much like
what's available in charcoalgrey99s xml webpages but not contained in a larger
web page.

Please read the FAQ section at www.riocar.org . When you posted your message to the BBS here, there was a blinking animated link that pointed to the FAQ, it was right up above the top of the box where you entered the text. You did not click on it. If you had clicked on it, you would have had your question answered without needing to post here.

He said he looked at the FAQ's in his original message. I just wonder which part he looked at, cause if i need to make the FAQ more clear with a more "basic" description, i'd be glad to do so.

thank you everyone for your help. I guess with seeing all the entries on the forum here about HIJACK and trying to desiffer them myself I thought it was like a EMPLODE or JEMPLODE spin off. The FAQs are really good and i know alot of people out here know that "computer lingo" better than I. Kernel and FTP are things i've never seen before until i got my RIO CAR. I just dont want to download something that i have know idea what it will do to my player because im sure i won't be able to restore it without deleteing everything on it and starting from scratch.

thanks again
Shawn

p.s. Loren in the FAQ's could you possabley put a sentence or two in there for us remedial computer types, just so we know what it basically does. Something like "hijack is an add on to the exisiting software in your player it allows you to have" and then list some of the basic features. That way people like me can decide if we should attept to alter our players or not

And don't forget the most important thing. Hijack seems to be ever-growing in its feature-set.

About the only thing I could suggest with the basic info is to break it down a little for people who aren't familiar with computers/car audio and the various jargon-based names to be able to more easily digest it.

In this respect, it might be nice to expand on what each of the features mentioned does. Not full descriptions with instructions or anything like that (you cover that later). But for instance "VolAdj" can have some additional text that explains what it means. Or maybe don't actually include the names at all for the features, but just English descriptions of what they do. I find it easier to use jargon/technical descriptions too, so I can't offer suggestions at this late hour. And for FTP you may mention that it's for transferring files to/from the player disks and might as well mention "web" along with "HTTP"

Hijack can be overwhelming to any user. Just keep in mind that after installing it, it isn't going to immediately do anything you don't want it to do. You will still have the same player experience until you decide to start exploring its features. So go ahead and install it and then read the FAQ as you play with the different features. I think a good place to start is by exploring the Hijack menu (most of its power comes from outside of the menu interface in my opinion and that's all covered in the FAQ)

But in general, it is a "low-level upgrade to offer a varied selection of user-controlled advanced features." Yeah, it's a mouthful.

Lastly, it's pretty safe using Logo-Editor to upload/flash Hijack to the player. Wiping Hijack and restoring your player software if needed, without hurting any of your music, is as easy as uploading a fresh .upgrade file. (serial connection for both)

It's even easier to wipe Hijack: just use the logo editor to re-install the original kernel.

Of course, the hijack site is a bit out of date.. no "original" "v2beta11" kernel there (yet). I'll build one and put it there this morning.

Cool. And a month from now, you'll probably be remapping the buttons on your remotes to suit personal preferences..

And in two months he'll be asking for new Hijack features!

I LOVE the remote control remapping features! I have an alpine iva-c800 LCD headunit, and the remote is very nice. It has a switch on the side to switch to navigation (to control the navi unit via remote control), since i don't have the navi, I use that for the empeg. The volume control still functions regardless of what the switch is set to. It is just too awesome, and seamless. Thanks Mark!!!

For some reason, I cannot pull up http://empeg-hijack.sourceforge.net. Would one of you kind souls be good enough to send me a direct link to the latest version of hijack, or email it to me?

Edit:
Someone mailed it to me. Thanks

Well, hijack does more than just add features now.
It seems to have fixed the biggest "show stopper" bug in the empeg player, the lockups.
It really is a necessity to have on your player, well at least for me anyway.
Thanks to mlord for all his hard work!!!
