Hi
I have a feeling that Mark is the only ony who will know all the answers here, but any help would be appreciated.

I posted this as a fault to bug reports, but after reading Lorens EXCELLENT hijack FAQ, i'm not sure.

Environment:
Rio2a with b11 and Hijack 200
The scenario is:
Using dc_servers = 1 and a wireless AP in my truck, I am able to use the empeg as a streaming MP3 server while at work.

I have the player standby timer (via emplode) set to 18,000 seconds, which should give me 5 hours on standbye before powering off.

The problem is that the empeg powers off after about 20-30 minutes.

As I said, I've just read the FAQ on hijack and found the standby_minutes parameter. I don't have it set, but according to the FAQ it defaults to 30 minutes.

The FAQ also says that the timer is triggered by the screen blanker activating. Is it possible that it is being activated by the player going into standby mode.

If this is the cause, what is the max time I can set here

Plan B is to test this tonight. Probably what I'll have to do, but I thought I'd ask first.

Cheers
PeterK

I doubt it has anything to do with Hijack. I'll bet it's just the player software not allowing it to stay in standby for longer than 20 minutes. Not sure, though.

It's important to figure out whether it's Hijack or the player software. The way to find out is:

1) Install the player software, pure, without hijack.

2) Put the player in your car.

3) Turn off the ignition so it goes into standby mode.

4) Wait 40 minutes, then go back to your car. Light still blinking? If so, then it's Hijack. If not, it's the player software.

There are other people who keep long standby times. I hadn't seen anyone mention the 20 minute limit before Peter's bug report. This might be a new "feature" of a 2.0beta. Hopefully someone with a long standby will post to comment.

I dohave mine set very long now, but only to avoid having to reboot the player when I dart quickly into a store or to get my hair cut (car's parked right outside the window, in view).

this couldn't be hijack's standy though right?
cause when that switches to standy it's still running...
my player goes to standy automatically all the time, but I can still stream from it and even connect via http with emplode and it doesn't wake up...the machine is still on...

Yeah, player(software) goes to standbye (blue light on).
I can still connect via tcp/ip for ~20-30 minutes then shutdown (blue light off.)

I though it was the player (again software) timer doing the power off, now I'm wondering if its the HiJack timer.

I'll test it tonight.

what I was trying to say in my message, is that hijack's timer set's it INTO standy, it doesn't power it off. I use it all the time...
I pause my player for a meeting when it's on my desk.
If it's a nice short meeting then when I get back my screen is just blanked not stand by.
If it a bad long meeting then it's in standy, but others (or me) can still connect to it. The hijcak timer sets it into standy after it has been on screen blanker for a while. I've never had it turn the power off to the machine.

Thanks for your reply guardian_j,
I could easily be wrong here but the excerpt from the HiJack FAQ below says shutdown.

In reply to:

standby_minutes=30 Number of minutes to automatically shut down the player after the screen blanker fires (default shown). When playlist completes, screen blanker begins countdown regardless of screen activity, then it triggers standby counter.

I'll test it with:
A a longer delay and
B removing the HiJack Kernel

I think that's worded bad...
I've been using this feature for long time without it shutting of the power. I think that means the shuts down the player "software"...
HEY LOREN!!! Could you fix this?

Haha, yet another thing i copied from one of Mark's posts...

I even changed this on my local copy of the FAQ on my 'puter, but forgot to update the online version with it. I even tested it myself to make sure it didn't really shut down. Changing now. Sorry for the confusion. =]

see if that's worded any better...

Feck you're right. Problem still happens on a plain 11b kernel.

I'll refile it under bug reports

Thanks for your help

Much clearer Loren.

Again thanks for putting the effort into this. Its a great resource.

PeterK
btw I did notice that there is a mamimum value you can use for standby_minutes. 120 works, 480 causes HiJack to display "HiJack config error" (or similar) on boot.

I didn't narrow it down any further.

adding that to the faq.

So no one wants to tackle a FAQ entry for all the XML stuff eh? I gotta get cracking on the HTTP entry... but i wanted to include all the XML stuff info in it, and i'm just not up to snuff on all of it yet.

yeah much clearer...
by the way...while you're at it...
I've been trying to figure some stuff out about the updating of hijack through ftp...I think I know the dir and file name, but when does it update? how often does it check? I know it does on resart...

It updates when you upload the kernel. It isn't a 'normal' file you write the .zimage file to - it's sort of an interface to the flash memory, and when you write to the file the flash gets updated and then the player reboots, loading the new kernel.

search the bbs and the FAQ for AutoHijack. All the instructions are with the program. Hijack doesn't autoupdate itself. AutoHijack only updates when you run the exe.

...[edit] ignore me, i misunderstood the question. It only updates on reboot when you upload via FTP, because the kernel is loaded on boot.

that's what I thought, but I thought I say a screen shot somewhere of it saying epmeg kernel updating, or something like that...maybe I was wrong...
I do know about the "special" file, but I think it would be helpful in the FAQ, I keep forgetting the dir to ftp it to...
but that's just my opinion...

It's been there, in this entry. Ya gotta dig for it though, it's at the bottom. I should make an entry just for that question eh?

probally not...maybe just and that to the autohijack part...just as in saying what it does, what directory it puts it in...that's where it seemed the most logical when i was looking for it myself...you know...I already had Hijack "installed" I wanted to update it...
