Greetings...

Does this happen to anyone else with the RIO? I think road vibration slowly makes the thing slowly slide out. Every couple of days I have to re-seat the thing. I think the latches are engaging 'cause I hear it clicking in. Not sure what to make of this.

Thanks
-Ted

Is the top lip of your car mount folder up by 90 degrees or is it sticking straight out and therefore preventing the player from pushing all the way home? A few people have reported that this fold had not been made on their mount, in which case contact support for a replacement.

Yeah, somethings up there. I've never had mine slide out... though i can't say i'd leave it in the car for days at a time anyhow. That ain't such a hot idea living in the city as i do.

I noticed this a little when I was playing with the thing before I got it installed - what I did was... If you have it out of the car, then you can see where the little "hook" of sorts sticks up through the outer case when the handle gets folded down. These didn't hook very well. I used a screwdriver (with the Empeg slid back out!) to push those little tabs in about 1/16" or so, just enough to give the hook something to grab onto.

Actually, I noticed as soon as I unpacked my Rio that the sled and the player's case weren't made as well as my Empeg MkII was. The Rio items were not as smooth and had much sharper edges than the Empeg did and one of the hooks on the handle fouls the sled which stops the handle from folding down fully and also doesn't allow the player to lock itself into the sled. This could be your problem. I also noticed that they'd changed from Stainless Steel to what looks like plated Mild Steel for the Sled. Doesn't make it any less functional but it's not as classy.

this is most likely your car docking sled sliding out.. I had the same problem because I had no locking do-hingy (DIN mounting cage I think?) to lock it into the dash. My solution was stick a penny into the dash so the lower part is in the dash and the upper part is keeping the docking sled from sliding out. Another solution could be cable ties to tie the back of the docking sled into something in your dash. Be creative.

Er, you didn't fix the sled into the dash by bending some of the tabs? Why, does it fit into a kind of box with no lip where bent tabs could engage?

Some of the replies here are confused about your initial statement.

Please clarify: Is the player slipping out of the docking sled, or is the docking sled slipping out of the dash?

sorry for notbeing clear:

the player is slipping out of the sled!

i modified the sled to fit in my 4Runner by drilling some holes in the side. So that puppy is pretty secure.

Thanks for all the replies!

Okay, thanks. Now, please have a look at this picture and let us know if that's what you've got.

The player's handle should, when closed, rotate a pair of "gripper hooks" into place at the top of the sled. These hooks should grab appropriately. Does your handle close? Does the player fit into the sled all the way?

The Rio items were not as smooth and had much sharper edges than the Empeg did and one of the hooks on the handle fouls the sled which stops the handle from folding down fully and also doesn't allow the player to lock itself into the sled.

I'm having this problem too. I'm now using a Rio60, but my first Rio was a Rio10. I'm still using the sled of the Rio10 in my car. But somehow, the Rio60 doesn't "click" as good in the sled, resulting in the player sometimes "ratteling" when driving. Pushing the handle stops this, but the problem comes back when the road I'm driving is bumpy.
I guess I could pry something under the handle to have it lock more sturdy, but I haven't come around to it yet.

Oh damn... My Mk2 sled doesn't have the top fold. I havent't fitted it yet so i dunno if it's gonna be a problem.

When i first saw it i thought 'oh neat they have fixed the design to remove that top lip.'

In my Mk1 installation the top lip looks pretty ugly because you can see it when the empeg is installed, as the cage does not sit recessed into the dash, but rather sticks out, and the lip is higher than the Mk1s front panel.

time to get a digital camera i think, it's hard to explain these things.

Now, the FAQ mentions that missing the fold might not be a problem, but doesn't it need the fold to stop it falling into the dashboard? You push the tabs up inside the din slot, and they are designed to jam up against the inside of the DIN slot, the folded edges sit jammed against the outside the DIN slot to stop the cage just slipping right into the dash. With the folds still being present on 3 sides, it's not going to totally fall in, but wont it sit a little loose?

Mine wasnt folded either, but I didnt discover it till after it was installed (of course).
After the install I noticed that the empeg was very rattly, especially over potholes, rumble strips, speed bumps, curbs, hydrants, etc. etc.

I sent an email to carsupport@riohome.com and got a reply the same day from David Moss. He put a non-defective sled in the post, and I got it about 3 days later.
I swapped it for the defective one, and mailed it back (the return address was US domestic so I didnt have to deal with overseas shipping :-)).
The new sled is a much tighter fit. No rattles at all, and the unit "snikts" into place perfectly.
If you have a defective unit and your concerned, get it replaced.

I didn't have the bend and had David Moss send me a new replacement sled (Thanks David for such a quick response - I got it in about 3 days from UK to Australia)

Anyways, I found that in the new replacment sled the parts that the hooks were supposed to latch onto were just out of reach of the hooks. I found that (very slightly) bending the two "dimple fingers" (sorry about the technical terms) on the bottom of the sled and very slightly bending the bits were the hooks were supposed to grab and all was sweet.

The new sled is definitely a more snug fit though. I haven't installed it yet, so I can't tell if there is much difference in terms of rattlling.

I'm just getting ready to install my RioCar this weekend in my new WRX and I noticed that the 2 sleds I have are both missing the fold on the top lip I remembered that this had been discussed before so did a quick search of the BBS and found this thread. Just mailed David @ empeg but I guess that I'll not be installing this weekend Unless of course the empeg guys do their magic Anyway thanks guys you've saved me a lot of hassle.
