Wow, I just started reading up on the cloning process as I bought a 60 GIG to replace my 40 GIG. My 40 is almost full, and of course, I'd like to put it's contents onto the 60 before selling the 40.

So I see that Clone Tool takes a huge amount of time with USB. How do you guys at Empeg do it? No way do you wait 2-3 days to let this process complete!

I'd rather not try and ftp to an intermediate PC as I don't have 40 gigs available to do this.

There's gotta be a quick and easy way to do this, and when we figure it out, this would make a great faq item...

The fastest option is to plug both disk drives into the same player and copy the FIDs folder as outlined in the Drive Upgrade Guide at www.riocar.org. You'll have to play a little game of Musical Drives to get the contents of both 20's onto the single 60, but it'll work.

Another option is to use Jemplode via ethernet to do the cloning. Faster than USB, or so I've heard. Dunno if anyone has successfully cloned 40 gigs in one sitting, though.

How do you guys at Empeg do it?

Until recently, we only had one empeg each -- no need to clone them. I just picked up a new 60Gb player, so I did this.

I'm curious if that'd be faster than MirrorDir/HiJack, because the FTP process MirrorDir uses seems slow to me...

How quick is MirrorDir/Hijack? As far as speed goes, this isn't the fastest -- it's taken about 20 hours so far, and is still not finished.

When it is finished, I'll work out some rough numbers.

The other issue is that this doesn't do mirroring (either one- or two-way) -- it's an all-or-nothing kinda thing.

That's a great page. Looks like somebody should put a link to it from the FAQ.

Somebody.

Well, maybe I shouldn't complain. MirrorDir with Hijack can be used to 'replicate' missing FIDs, so once the players are cloned, it'll keep them in-sync. Works well too, now that Mark has ironed out all those kftpd bugs.

I'll benchmark the next one, but IIRC it was about ~250kB/sec... I could be just be misremembering as I wasn't watching it really close.
