The FAQ lightly touches this subject, but I'm wondering what Hugo, Rob, etc. are doing nowadays. Are they still officially employed by Sonic Blue and working on new projects or did they get dropped like a hot potato?

Cheers!
Dave

The Cambridge team is SONICblue's "Audio Applications Software Team". Hugo was recently made a Fellow of SONICblue - the highest recognition in the Engineering department. Only one or two fellows are appointed per year.

Because a Fellow cannot also be a manager (they just get to play with toys all day!) I've taken over management of the team. Mike remains our chief software architect. In total we have ten engineering staff and two support staff here.

The latest project developed in Cambridge (that we can talk about) is:

http://www.sonicblue.com/audio/rio/rio_audiocenter.asp

So - yes - we're still around!

Rob

Cool! Congratulations, Hugo!

I've taken over management of the team.

Congratulations, Rob!

Why didn't you guys tell me this when we were together last weekend?

And to answer TreeRip's original question more directly, the cambridge team is working on <censored> and <censored> <censored> right now. Really amazing <censored> that can <censored> and <censored> in <censored>. So now you know.

what does the audio applications software team mean

Does it mean all rio audio stuff or just empeg like things. Or do you have input towards smaller things like the riot, i know you didn't do the software but did you help with any concepts or features on it.

There's another group, in the USA, that did all the smaller-footprint stuff (i.e. Rio 800, Rio Volt, Rio Riot). Currently we aren't working on anything that won't run bash.

Is this your decision, or Sonicblues? :-)))

Cool, well I'll start saving my money then for {censored} because I can't wait until {censored} comes out.

I'm just glad to hear everyone is still gainfully employed and working on fun stuff still. Being surrounded by tech companies imploding around me here in Silicon Valley makes me sad when I see companies with brilliant products fail and I was worried that the same was happening in the UK when news of the empeg was forced into EOL. Glad to hear you all are doing very well.

Cheers!

As they've stated before, the automotive projects they're working on are for OEMs and will not be sold through SonicBlue. At least that's the plan.

Why no Ethernet? According to the sales folks its all PNA.
I wish I could talk to marketing.......

You can add Ethernet via the USB interface - once you have a supported USB to Ethernet Adapter.
The Beta testers for the product [here on the BBS] can and did use Ethernet on their units via USB.

I kind of agree about why its not built in, but then they have to compromise somewhere and the beauty about going to USB is that its more future proof that way - just a real hassle now.

Yes, I'm using a cheap ($30.00) Linksys USB10T ethernet converter to hook my HSX-109 to the network. Works like a charm.

Hugo did push for ethernet on the motherboard, but when you work for a big company, you do what they tell you to do. I forget why they decided against built-in ethernet, but I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.
