I'd like a utility that:

- Sits in the Windows system tray.

- At specified intervals (specified in seconds such as 5, 10, 30, 30, 90, 120) it pings a specified IP address.

- If, after a specified timeout (specified in milliseconds or seconds), there is no reply, the tray icon changes to indicate a problem. Optionally, it would play a sound.

I'm sure such a utility must exist, right? I was unable to locate one in a quick Google search. Must not have got my terms right or something.

I could probably code that in a day? Hmmmm

I know, me too. I just figured someone else MUST have written something just like it already, and there's no sense in re-inventing the wheel.

What about Big Brother? I don't know if it can sit in the system tray, but I use it for a number of machines at the office.

They make a cron daemon for windows I'm sure. For unix I use Mond .. it does this and more ... all using SMNP unless otherwise specified. Checksa out my printer to make sure I've got toner, paper jams, etc. Examines my router for proper responses. Checks my available disk space on a variety of machines. Looks for processes that take up too much cpu or time (stuck), check the web site, email, and ftp servers for real responses not just pings.

And this is just what I use it for, it's got the capability for so much more. It'll even page you, email you, or phone you if you've got a modem. Crazy.

Thanks, Greg and Paul. Those are interesting suggestions, but they don't meet my intitial requirements. I was looking specifically for something lightweight to go in the Windows System Tray.

Hey Tony, make sure you let us know if you find/make anything like that, 'cause that would be most useful. We use WhatsUp Gold here, which works pretty good for heartbeat monitoring, but it's a far cry from a lightweight SysTray app. A little app like that would be really handy for certain stuff... For example, we have a direct link to one of our client's networks over frame relay, and it's notoriously flaky. An app like that, pointing to the router on their end would be pretty slick.

Yeah, that's the sort of application I was intending it for.

I have one that pings QUAKE servers, heh, but I'm not trying to ping a game server.

AlertPing seems to be at least close to what you're looking for. NoNags is your friend....

Try ServersAlive. It sits in your tray, and i free for use to check up to 10 services (as far as I remember).

ServersAlive is THE BUSINESS. Exactly what I needed, including some features I didn't know that I needed until it gave them to me, and now I find them indespensible.
