I am looking for a empeg-like solution for playing my MP3 collection on an PC, preferably on my Linux machine. I did some searching on the net but there are so many solutions and I don't want to try them all.
Maybe someone can recommend something out of his own experience?
I am looking for a solution which is similar to the empeg in respect to the way it manages the whole collection in a database-like way. Like with the empeg I want to build playlists on the fly like "this song", "this album", "everything from this artist" or "everything in the collection by random".
The programm should (additionally?) work from commandline, so it can be triggered via telnet or driven by scripts. Any suggestions?

BTW: Does anyone know what happend to MP3VoiceControl? It sounds like it does pretty much what I want plus voice recognition but the download site doesn't seem to work

mp3 explorer can do some things like searching on artist, year, title, album and genre. It can also search on bitrate and some other things in the tags. See attachment

You can play or enqueue the search result into winamp.

The main window offers a choice of Artist, Genre and Album views - a bit slow to switch over though.

I've started looking at something like this for myself. One program I've seen that caught my eye is Otto (http://www.cardhouse.com/otto/).

Haven't gotten a chance to install it yet, but most of these mp3-database things are all alike, just differing schema. This one is web based, not telnet or cmdline driven, but its mostly Perl, so given time a cmdline client could probably be hacked together.

My only issue is how the playlists link up (still looking at that) and empeg syncing (unlikely to find in any tool,but if you've built up a database, might as well duplicate it on the empeg). I'm looking at mlord's empsync to try and couple it with a MySQL database to grab playlists, new tunes and such.

It's hard to remember which mag. but I think Maximum Linux had an article about building and MP3 database using MySQL. It was part of a project to build a linux box for playing MP3's.

After searching all over the internet for mp3 solutions and escpecially for my car I found a french project called mp3sb based on linux and mysql (database) with many clients for linux and win32.

i haven't tested it yet but now that it's hard for me to use the cos i broke my right hand (i will have time to test many things)

It is used over a network and could have a client on empeg to listen to music on pc via network ?

Have I missed something somewhere ? You can insert/append/replace in a playlist on the Empeg. This is true. When you talk of building playlists on the fly is this what you mean?

Or is there some great way of building a playlist from scratch whilst having the Empeg in the Car, and then when i return to the house I can see it in Emplode ?

Sorry if my posting was a bit misleading. I'm talking of a solution apart from the empeg. I'm a lazy guy and always leave the empeg in the car. I just want a solution that gives me the same functionality (or anything near it) on my PC without using the empeg.

I will take a look at the mentioned projects and will post some kind of summary, in case someone else is interested.

Have you thought about simply plugging your empeg into the "Line In" jack on your PC?

That's what I've been doing ever since I got the empeg. I take it between my desk at home, my car, and my desk at work. That way, I'm listening to the same playlists and music all day wherever I go. Also, it allows me to mix my music with the PC's sounds so I can still hear my e-mail notification sound even though music is playing. And by scrounging an extra power supply for it, I can do this without needing to transport a power supply back and forth.

The player was designed to work this way. I much prefer using the empeg to play and manage my music than any PC program.

I've just noticed that the FAQ says:

Note: If you add a second disk drive to the player, it will require more voltage.

Shouldn't that say "more current"?
