hi,

sorry if these are really dumb. the people here are sophisticated enough that i am a little intimidated from posting but i will anyway :)

question 1 - is there a way to get sonicblue to add a HD to my unit? the FAQ suggests it but i don't see an "order form" for a HD upgrade anywhere

question 2 - is there a way to automatically add IDV3 tags to my MP3's that are missing the info? like some kind of cddb query, as opposed to me right-clicking every file and hand-entering all the data?

question 3 - what does the config.ini do and how do i get to it? is it doable with just emplode or do i have to do some kind of terminal connection to the unit somehow?

question 4 - how do you move around in your music? i'm used to the traditional continuous/program/shuffle modes of other devices, but i'm not sure how to interact with the empeg UI to find a song and play it, or to choose a group (artist, CD, etc) to play.

thanks much! can't wait to get it installed on saturday!

joe

you can mass-insert id3-tags with e.g. mp3-tag-studio (www.download.com). you can mass-set id3 tags manually, set id3-tags based on filenames etcetc. have a look.

With cddb it doesn't work, cause cddb looks on the ID of a CD and then looks if it finds some entries for that ID in it's DB.
The only thing you could do is re-rip your CD-collection (e.g. with musicmatch jukebox) and tell the ripping-programm to fill in the ID3-Tags based on CDDB. But you'd have to do your whole collection again...

always ask questions, how else will you learn? Don't worry no-one here bites.

question 1 - is there a way to get sonicblue to add a HD to my unit? the FAQ suggests it but i don't see an "order form" for a HD upgrade anywhere

If you have just bought your player (congratulations on your new toy!), you have the option of buying and instsalling the HD yourself or you can contact Rob or customer support for them to do it for you.
If you choose to go it yourself you will void your warranty and you must be sure of what you're doing, so read the FAQ and plug us with questions if you don't understand ANYTHING!
The HD can be installed yourself without too much difficulty and should probably be attempted before you put your entire collection on it.

question 2 - is there a way to automatically add IDV3 tags to my MP3's that are missing the info? like some kind of cddb query, as opposed to me right-clicking every file and hand-entering all the data?

Also in the FAQs are a few pointers to tag editors. It is REALLY important to have all your tags correct before you get them into emplode. V2 now does a great job of tag editing, but wasn't designed exclusively for that purpose. Besides there is no easy way to retrieve your changed tracks from the player, so should anything go awry you'll have to do it all over again.

question 3 - what does the config.ini do and how do i get to it? is it doable with just emplode or do i have to do some kind of terminal connection to the unit somehow?

I'm not the expert here but i believe that you need the developer image on the riocar/empeg, a terminal prog and some instructions on where to find it. I'm giving this one the flick pass.

question 4 - how do you move around in your music? i'm used to the traditional continuous/program/shuffle modes of other devices, but i'm not sure how to interact with the empeg UI to find a song and play it, or to choose a group (artist, CD, etc) to play.

The FAQ should help lots, briefly:
Generally, all your music is in Playlists. You can have any track appear in any number of playlists without duplicating the physical data as the playlists are just references in a database. these playlists can be played as a whole or you can select eny of its children (playlists or tracks) to be played.
Additionally, you can search for tracks by PIN, year, trackname, artist, genre and source. the results can be added to the end of the playlist (append), added next (insert), or replace the current playlist (search(?))

Does this clarify things a little?

I don't do Emplode, but with emptool the config.ini settings are accessed via the 'config' command, and in JEmplode, a subset is accessible via the Configuration(?) menu item. I expect Emplode has a similar function.

Only for some options (like drive icon). Some others (like timecode display on serial port) must be added manually, from the shell.

Please don't take this as stock RTFM advice (TFM is rather out-of-date, BTW), but do one or two cycles of browsing through the FAQ (here and/or on the new website) and playing with the player and emplode, then come back with questions. You will still have plenty of them left .

Welcome!

Most of the stuff in config.ini is available from the Player Configuration dialog.

For stuff that's not, add a "allow_edit_config" DWORD value to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SONICblue\emplode\2.0\Settings" key in the registry. Set it to 1. This will give you a config.ini option on the Tools menu.

Exercise extreme caution when editing it directly.

The email address to contact about a hard disk upgrade is: carsales@riohome.com. They will provide a quote for shipping the unit as well as installing a second disk.

OK, that's too cool. Had to add the Settings Key to 2.0 before I could add allow_edit_config, as the only Settings key I had was directly under emplode.

Nice feature.

Bah, you could've mentioned that yesterday when I asked you whether there was any way to turn on serial notify from Emplode...

ARGH! Why do you guys always hide the best features from me?!?!?!?!!?!?

FYI: To anyone doing this, I also had to add the 2.0\settings folder myself, as well as the dword value (and set it to 1).

COOL FEATURE, THANK YOU!

Ooo Ooo, you could use Songprint to identify your MP3s! ... well.. in a perfect world where Napster didn't ruin the market for everyone and force my company bankrupt you could have... :)

make sure you add that to the downloads on riocar.org so we don't have to search for it later =]

In answer to your above question, I use a program called ID3MAN, which automatically tags my files based on "Frequency Fingerprinting." This program works for about 80% of my files. After that I use another program, DR Tag to fix the files that ID3MAN could not identify.

I just got my Empeg(RioCar) on Monday and very amazed with the unit. I've been wanting one for some time now, and got by with a NEO35. Two words "NO COMPARISON." I shoud have gotten the Empeg in the first place! All the money I've spent trying to get the NEO working and sound good could have been spent on an Empeg.

I did a search on Google of Automatic ID3 Tags. You can download it at: www.id3man.com

Ahum...

You use Win9x with Regedit v4, but Windows 2000 uses v5... Actually you should use regedt32 instead of regedit in win2k. I don't know if it criples win2k (or higher) in any way though.

Better post some screenshots of adding it manually. I am willing to provide them for riocar.org !

Do you want to say that M$ is changing such a trivial format as text export of registry in non-upward-compatible way? Even for them this is too much !

Win2k will accept the V4 regedit file just fine. It did on my machine. I deliberately made it a V4 regedit file so that it would work on both 9x and 2k.
