Recently my computer, a desktop running Windows 10, stopped going into Sleep mode.

I have tried all the recommended things:
1) Restore the power usage plan to defaults
2) Set the Multimedia Settings to "Allow sleep"
3) Set Hybrid Sleep setting to "Off"
4) Set put the computer to sleep at "1 hour"
5) Set Turn off hard disk after... setting to "20 minutes"
6) Set Turn off the display setting to "15 minutes"
7) Powered down all peripherals

The display does indeed turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity. The Sleep mode never comes. It used to Sleep, as recently as a week or 10 days ago, no changes have been made to hardware or software unless a Windows update came in the middle of the night when the computer was supposed to be sleeping.

Have I missed something?

I was trying to find out why my laptop would fail on battery when the battery status showed that 95% available and several hours of charge remaining. I found the command-line program powercfg and looking at the results it generated I found that some of my USB devices wouldn't allow the system to sleep. I didn't find my battery issue but this may find what could be preventing your computer from sleeping.

I had the same problem with my Windows 10 desktop machine last year. I spent ages trying to diagnose it, gave up in the end and ignored it. It fixed itself a few months later.

There are commandline tools in Windows to show why it isn't sleeping, though in the end they didn't help me fix the problem.

Heh, funny, I had the opposite experience. I was never able to get sleep mode to work correctly with my Windows 10 machine. I tried for a long time, but eventually gave up on it. I would be able to get it to go to sleep, but every time I got back to the computer, somehow it had awoken on its own.

Last month I completely reformatted my system and re-installed it. Now the sleep feature works no problem and I didn't even have to set it. Go figure.

I had the same problem with my Mac.

Just kidding! They seem to have solved that one about 15 years ago. I hear that if something like that does happen though, it's usually fixed with a SMC reset.

I've had plenty of sleep problems with my Macs and there is a similar commandline tool to the Windows one for investigating/logging which processes/devices are preventing sleep.

Guess I've been fortunate, although outside of an external hard drive, I rarely use any sort of peripherals and I stick to pretty widely used software.

This problem has gone away following last night's Windows 10 update to v10.0.17134 Build 17134
