What was the limit on the drive height? I'm thinking of snagging an IBM DTCA-24090 which is 12.7mm high. Will this fit in the second slot in my Mk1?

I'm running out of space too and considering to break the seals and add an additional drive. The one that you consider is 4GB, isn't it? Shouldn't be too difficult, when I read djmoore's guidelines. I'm tagging onto your message to post my own queries. Maybe that Hugo or anyone else can help:

1) I've read about a 18GB Toshiba drive (MK-1814GAV), but cannot find a supplier / price. Do they exist in real life? Would it fir inside the empeg?

2) On IBM drives: I've seen their 10GB (Travelstart 18GT models - DARA218000 and DARA215000??) and 25GB models (Travelstar 25GS - model DARA22500), but remember the Empeg warnings that (some??) IBM drives would be a difficult fit.

What should I do? I need an extra drive (donot want to prune the current playlists) and would at leadt need 10GB. What is the best (easy installation) option??

take a look at the toshiba 10gb drives; they're cheap! (I picked 2 up for around 500$ total..)

Over here (Europe) they are almost US$ 350 each (that's after discount; excl 17.5% sales tax)

...I purchased mine from PC Progress - it actually came to $528 (for two) after shipping, and that was back in december.. It doesn't look like they carry the 10gb unit anymore, but they seem to have a 12gb toshiba (8.5mm) for $289 ...Here's a direct list of their notebook drives

Also, try going to pricewatch.com, and checking their "notebook drives" category...

Yes they do exist. I called a computer store that I used to work for and they are able to get them so I imagine that just about anyplace can.

This was discussed previously, and if I remember correctly, half an inch is too much. While the disk would physicaly fit, it would not have enough room to vibrate, defying the purpose of shock mounts. (I think Toshibas Empeg uses are 9.5mm high.)

To put this in perspective, the 10Gb Toshiba drives that we fit are 12.5mm high and the 25Gb IBM TravelStar drives are 17.5mm (too big for many laptops as well as the empeg).

Your 24090 is a Travelstar, but IBM lists its height as 12.7mm. Which is just a hair taller than the 12.5mm Toshiba MK-6409 that came with my 6.4GB empeg. Well within the 14mm limit I would say, just like the IBM 18GT models (DARA 215000 and 218000 which hold 15GB and 18GB) and which are also listed as 12.7 mm tall.

I want a (large ) second drive too. First on my list is the Toshiba 1814GAV (18 GB; 12.5 mm); then the two IBMs of 18GB and 15GB. Last resort (of if I can't afford any of these really big babies; I'd wished that European prices were as low as in the US) the Toshiba 1011GAV that is used in moore's installation guidelines.


Rob/Hugo, any comments / experiences ?

12.5/12.7mm drives are ok. What won't fit are the 25Gb 17mm IBMs!

Toshiba 18's do exist, but are hard to get hold of. The IBM 18's came out earlier, and we've played with them already - again, they're expensive.

You might also try Fujitsu, who do a 12.5mm 18gb.
