I have been watching the new crop of low cost 4K TVs that seem to be popping up with considerable interest. Seiki do a 50 inch one that can be obtained for around $1000 US at the moment, and TCL are supposed to be launching a sub-1K USD one very soon of similar spec.

I'm looking at one as a CAD monitor, for which purposes the low refresh rate that HDMI 1.4 allows at that resolution is not a problem. One 50 inch 4K monitor is a very nice possible replacement for a 2 x 2 array of 24 inch 1080p monitors, having the same effective resolution and slightly larger screen area. I lust for it...

And of course, my current cad box has a total of eight video outputs, so I could have one of these plugged into the port capable of 4k output, and still have seven of my eight dell 2407s connected at the same time.

The problem is of course that these screens only seem to be on sale in the US. So the question is, would it be feasible to get one shipped to the UK? How would I do it? Would it be prohibitively expensive? Would it even survive?

Any ideas?

The cheapest option may be to just find someone going over the pond and have them check it on as oversize luggage. You'll pay much less than shipping it (although the packaging is 3" too large in height for BA, so the packaging might need to be modified a bit depending on the airline.)

Well, they aren't made in the US, are they? It can only be a matter of time until they're all over UK Ebay like those Catleap monitors.

Well, I have a similar, but even trickier problem. I need to get a whole rack cabinet full of stuff shipped...

Depending on the size and weight of the package, oversize baggage might be more expensive. I've been charged over $2000 (well, that was what it was supposed to be, the folks at the ticket counter usually took a bunch off thinking it was too expensive) on some trips (depending on the airline).

I was about to question whether or not the monitor would actually accept a 4k signal from a computer (rather than just taking a 1080p signal and upscaling it).

But then I saw one of the review/comments to the Amazon entry which included the exact commands required to get the thing to display a computer image at 4k. Pretty cool.



Imagine what a flight simulator would be like with eight of these things. :-)

(Is there a such thing as a video card which can do eight 4K outputs at any sort of a decent frame rate?)

Someone like www.cevalogistics.com would be who we've used in the past for moving loaded datacenter racks for conferances, both half heights and full heights, in keal cases. No idea on costs, but cheaper then having FedEx Freight drop it on it's side.

At the last conference there was a pallet or two of 42" LG TVs, maybe 20 or 30 of them, packed in their normal shipping boxes. I've no idea how they we're shipped, they might have been rented locally. Typically I've seen them shipped in individual rugged keal cases, which I've sure are not cheap to buy. I'm sure they are rentable, but un-likely for one way trips. Maybe a wooden crate?

For some one who's quick on the mouse doing CAD I can see it might be slightly annoying. Definitely not unusable though.

Didn't we do this a while back with a pallet of lighting stuff for Rob?

I can't remember the details but it was around £600ish I think. Plus taxes as this end. That was slightly oversize too I think.

If anyone remembers the company that was used...

We used freightquote.com. They used a company called RH Freight to pick up the pallet in NY. I don't know what other companies were involved between NY and Cambridge.

The cost was $619 (USD) for 1500 pounds with dimensions of 48x40x60 (inches).
