Well I’ve got my removable side pipes for my drag race car about ready for their final welds. Before I put all the individual pipes together into the collector I want to coat them with some kind of heat resistant paint or something. I’m not a big fan of powder coating plus I would have to do that twice. Once on the individual pipes and once after the final weld.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a paint/coating?

I should have done this all in stainless steel but at the time I had a hard time finding the pipes I needed.

Heat resistant paint for barbecues will work, but I've only seen it in black. I used a can of the Rustoleum stuff for my mufflers (which are big and silver and visible from behind, which looked hideous).

Hmmm, guess it is available in three colors, aged copper, black and brown.

That is the stuff, but I picked it up from Home Depot. Any home improvement shop should have it.

I’ve used similar paint years ago but it always turned chalky and flaked off. Maybe it’s better now.

I’ve always liked PPG (Deltron line) and this looks good. But I don’t need 3.5 gallons for a tank, yet …

I used that black on my grill last year when I got a new one and it is still going good (after a lot of use and being in the AZ sun and winter). I'll have to look to see if it is flaking off the mufflers, but the car is in the shop right now (they are keeping it overnight while waiting for a wire harness to come in). I haven't noticed it, so I would guess it isn't and I put that on in Dec 2010 or Jan 2011.

I am always amazed at the range of products companies that you would never think of (like PPG) produce for the military.

POR-15 high temp paints. Has the added benefit of doing a great job preventing rust.

I've not used the high temp variety, but I used regular POR-15 on my trailer and it's done very well in an EXTREMELY corrosive environment.

I’ve definitely had issues with headers rusting. Seems like that is what they like to do hest.

And with puff like this... how could I go wrong.

Side-jacking... Is the rustoleum or similar big-box-sourced paint acceptable for long term use on a barbecue/grill?

I have to paint my mother-in-law's old, but otherwise restored, Ducane in the next week or so.

Years ago I was, I guess you’d call it a “freelance car painter,” and one word of advise is -> Preparation.

I always: get whatever it is to bare metal or a good paint base; clean with a solvent or cleaner; use metal prep on bare metal; use appropriate primer; use a tack cloth; paint in a dust free environment with appropriate temperature/humidity.

Is there some kind of paint that would stand up to being out in the sun better than another?

My white trash tire planter faded and looks crappy after one summer.

I think that might be because it's rubber, does it need a primer of some kind first?

Exterior house paint, perhaps?

I painted my van years ago with just acrylic enamel. I then proceeded to immediately damage the rear door. For some reason I bought the more expensive urethane paint (PPG’s Delton paint) to fix the door. Now the entire red van has faded except the rear door looks like new.

I believe DuPont has a similar line of paint

Also adding a clear coat helps
