My daughter is getting a Canon 5D. She would like to know if the Canon 2.8 70-200 IS II is that much better than the Sigma 2.8 70-200 OS lens.

She had seen reports of poor focus on one side of the lens, blur at various focal lengths, and the focus ring breaking on the Sigma?

Have any of you seen these issues?

Thanks,

Ross

I have one of the first-gen Canon f2.8 70-200mm lenses.
The quality of this lens cannot be overstated.
It is utterly sensational, even wide-open.

It is a large lens, though. If she doesn't truly need the f2.8 part, then the Canon f4 version is lighter and more portable.

If she does need f2.8, and can afford the Canon lens, then there's no need to even consider the Sigma. It may be a great lens too, dunno. But the Canon one is one of their very best.

Cheers

I'd agree with Mark.

I'd love to have the Mk II your daughter is looking at but the Mk I is still so good I can't see why I need to replace it just yet.

If she has the money to spend she will not regret buying the Canon, I can't say the same will be true for the Sigma. There is also a very good chance that the Canon will holds it's value really well. I bought my 70-200 3 years ago, it's worth more now that it was then, even though it's had some really hard professional use!

Cheers

Cris
