I'm trying to figure out a solution to an organizational problem (usually something I'm pretty good at, but I'm having trouble).

I'm currently driving a Toyota Highlander with three rows of seating. The last row is always folded down, because I carry a lot of random crap around in the back of my car for work (lots of spare cables, tools, a couple routers, etc). The problem is that I frequently want to carry more than five people in my car, but can't because it's full of junk.

What I'd like to do is to have all this stuff in a storage container that can sit in the back of my car, but in a pinch I could take it out and put it on the roof instead. I don't want a permanent container on the roof, because it's not as easy to access, I don't like the look, and I want to fit into garages

Does anyone know of any such thing?

Maybe one of these? Might not be rigid enough for what you want to put into it, though.

Yakima makes a "small" hard-sided cargo box. There's a fabric one there, too.

This should do the trick. Low cost, too.

Thanks for the links, Bitt. I'm still not sure how easy those things are to remove, and the canvas one appears to be permanent, you just collapse it when you're not using it. That's fine, but I don't think I'd like the look all that much. It might be a good solution, though.

Cargo snap buckles secure the bag to the rack.
Un-snap the buckles, remove from roof and store in truck/boot with other junk.

Yeah, it looks like they might be a pain in the ass to move back and forth.

Do you have a trailer hitch? How about something like this or this or this?

Hmm, I might have to take a closer look at that one.


Unfortunately that might be difficult even if I had a trailer hitch, as I live in a condo complex and my car is parked in a pretty tight garage.


You know, one thing I hadn't thought of is that when this thing is on the roof, it's going to be getting covered in bugs and bird crap and dirt in general. I probably wouldn't want to put it back inside my nice clean car...

Well, my thought was that if you could find a smaller one that you would be able to move it from the "trunk" to the hitch when needed.
