I've got a Samsung NC10 (running Windows 7), which currently has a 160GB disk in it. I'm considering replacing the hard disk with an SSD, to increase the battery life, and maybe speed it up a bit. It'd also remove the need to have an 8GB SDHC card hanging out of the front (used for ReadyBoost).

The top of the range SSDs cost about the same as the netbook, so that seems like overkill.

Since I'm only using about 30GB of the space, and it's only powered by an Intel Atom N270, I figure that I don't need a screamingly quick SSD. It also doesn't need to be that big: probably 60-80GB will do fine.

I mainly use the netbook for internet and email. It has Office 2007 installed on it, which I use occasionally; and it has Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 on it, which I use less frequently (since it's CPU-constrained, and the screen's a bit small). I've upgraded the RAM to 2GB, so the only way to make these go more quickly is to replace the CPU (not happening) or to use a faster disk (hence SSD).

Any recommendations?

I think Kingston markets a stripped-down Intel SSD for under US$100. Still PDQ, and probably just right for your application.

Cheers

Oh, wait.. those are the expensive ones.. Here are the cheaper ones, still with excellent performance.

And Intel themselves also now have a value line, with similar characteristics.

Cheers

Thanks Mark. I can't find that exact model in the UK, but now that the 'V' stands for value, I know what to look out for. I can find 64GB Kingston SSDNow V-Series drives for about £110.
