I bought an Empeg off Ebay. I am having issues with trying to download songs to the player. I could not get the USB driver to install, it kept saying that it did not install correctly. So I tried ethernet and I am able to see my player and connect to it and sync with it. However, everytime I try and load a song in to emplode, emplode crashes. Anyone have any ideas?

After I do a sync it says "All music could not be sync: error 0xc0041002"

I am running XP and it says that it is v2.00 on the empeg

I think you may have loaded emplode from the CD that came with the empeg. If that's the case, your copy of emplode is incredibly out of date (probably 1.02).

Try installing this version of emplode.

Nope, it did not come with CD so I downloaded v2.00 of Emplode, which is what I am running.

It also crashes whenever I try to add a new playlist.

Just tried the Empeg on my other PC (running Win2000) and the same thing. I can see the Empeg out there via ethernet connection but when I try and add a new playlist emplode crashes.

Don't panic. There's nothing wrong so far, this is just normal until one gets the correct versions of everything in place. Also note that USB drivers are just plain buggy -- ethernet is the preferred connection method.

Cheers

Well I haven't had a heart attack yet (but getting close). I have wanted one of these for a long time and finally decided to buy one.

Well how do I get the correct versions of things? I thought that I had all the latest versions of what I needed, I started with downloading emplode from the web, so it is v2.00. I crash via ethernet.

No worries. You should be using one of the v3alpha11 software or the v2.01 software. And others here can advise you on the correct Emplode version for each of those.

Others also can help you better than I can, for now.

Ok thanks. It did not come with the serial cable (so I can not upgrade the empeg) and I don't have a null serial cable and couldn't find one today at work (only straight through ones). So looks like I might have to pick up a null serial cable tomorrow.

I have been able to get the USB drivers to install on my PC running Win2000. Still crash when ever I try to add a play list or a song though.

Here is the last bit of what I get on the error log when I try to creat a new play list:

22:25:48.265 PlaylistTreeItem.cpp(208) : I [02ac] CPlaylistTreeItem::OnNodeChanged

Once you get your null modem cable, instructions can be found here in the empeg FAQ. You may wish to read the all of the parts of the FAQ that may apply to your current situation. There's a ton of good information there. (Just don't get too overwhelmed )

I'd also strongly suggest that you download Tony's Empeg logo editor and use it to install the latest Hijack kernel (what is Hijack?).

The car docking sled uses a crossed over cable, so if you only have a straight through serial cable to connect to the PC, you can do your serial work with the player plugged into the docking sled. There is a hole in the sled so that you can still use the AC adapter power jack in this configuration.

Thanks!

I left the car dock at home, but brought the Empeg and power supply to work with. Looks like I'll be making a trip back to the house at lunch today. But at least I don't have to buy a cable just to see if upgrading will fix the issue

In the longer term, you still want that cable. Get one.

On the other hand, if it's going to be a midday trip anyway, you might as well make it a trip to Radio Shack to get a proper null modem cable. Since you need that cable anyway for the long term: eventually the sled is going to get installed into a car...

Radio Shack website says web only on the cable but just called and they have a null adaptor in stock. So I'll pick one of those up as they are not that expensive, only $8.

Thanks for the help guys. Like I said I have wanted one of these for a long time. I have already ordered a tuner kit which should be in in a couple of days as well. So hopefully I can get the player up and running.

Ok got the null cable, and still get the same results after upgrading to V2.01. The upgrade completed successfully. However when I run Emplode it still crashes whenever I try and create a playlist or add song.

I tried upgrading to v3.11 and after I did it, Emplode (downloaded the one for versions 3.xx) does not see my Empeg connected via the null serial.

Okay, so now connnect to the player serial port with a terminal program (eg. ckermit, kermit, minitty, PuTTY, or if you really must, hyperterm).

Hit Control^C to kill off the music player application, and then restart it again with this command:

player -i

-ml

Ok I only have hyperterminal on my machine. This is really going to show my inexperience but how exactly do I connect to it through hyperterminal?

Set the computer serial port to 115200 8n1, then..

Plug the cable in, and hit Control^C.

Still no luck. All I get is the blinking in the terminal and it want let me type or do anything.

Again probably another stupid question, is this suppose to be with the null serial cable or a straight through?

Ok, it looks like it goes through all it's checks but I am unable to do anything.

I do see this
Partition check:
hda: hda1 < hda5 hda6 > hda2 hda3 hda4
RAMDISK: ext2 filesystem found at block 0
RAMDISK: Loading 320 blocks [1 disk] into ram disk... done.

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
empeg-pump v0.03 (19980601)
Press Ctrl-A to enter pump...VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
change_root: old root has d_count=1
Trying to unmount old root ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 4k init player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.00 20
03/04/01.
Prolux 4 empeg car - 2.1434 Mar 26 2003
Vcb: 0x4086d000

Then after this just the curser blinking.

Flow Control is set to Hardware and Parity to none, did these need to be changed?

Ok looks like Flow Control needed to be set to Xon/Xoff. Hit Control^C and then typed
player -i

now what?

Looks like when I type in player -i it ups the volume.

Good. If it still dies with emplode, then somebody else here can walk you through the "delete database & playlists" and "manually rebuild database" steps, all of which are available in glorious detail in the Empeg FAQ.

Cheers

Ok I disconnected and tried Emplode and it still crashes.

There are no playlist or songs currently on the player.

was anything suppose to happen after
player -i
-ml

I am assuming that I was suppose to type the -ml? Anyway nothing happened after I typed these.

Also what is e2fsck? It recommends that I run it.

Mmm.. perhaps somebody else here can remember the details, but something like this came up before in the past year: emplode not working on a player with zero playlists/tunes installed.

I forget whether there was a trivial workaround or not.

EDIT: It could be as simple as using jEmplode (link at top of this page) instead, at least for the initial download of at least one tune/playlist.

Cheers

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't running the drive builder fix all this?

It would still leave him with a system with no tunes or playlists.

That might fix it, but ISTR a recent case of somebody else with the same trouble.

Right, but since he recently bought it off eBay I am assuming he has not yet gotten any tunes or playlists on it.
