The pictures below are of a thermal cutoff switch of some sort. What I know is that it's for 120V operation and once it reaches a certain temperature, it breaks the current. Once it cools, the switch comes back on. I have been able to find some at Mouser, but they're not surface mount like this one and they have to be replaced once the switch trips.

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong categories, but I can't find anything surface-mount like the one pictured. The numbers on the switch aren't helping much either.

I also need a switch like this to function on 277V input. I don't know if a different switch would be needed. Any help in identifying where I could get this would be appreciated. The proper name for this type of component would also be very helpful. Thanks.

Have you tried searches using "110v thermal circuit breaker" (and/or 120v and possibly leaving off the word circuit)

I might be mistaken, but are you sure that item pictured is not a fuse holder? What you are looking for sounds like a resettable fuse.

Ray the electrician says that box is typical of can lights and what you see there is a ballast. They should be available in various voltages.

I believe you're looking for a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) thermistor. The other option is a "thermal fuse" or "thermal cutoff", but they require replacing just like a normal fuse.

Can you tell us what the application is? What is the device this is controlling. Secondly, are you absolutely sure this is a thermal switch? The fact that there is a white wire (neutral) entering the unit is odd for a thermal switch. Being mounted on the outside of the can is odd too. Is this the complete assembly or is there an outer enclosure that covers the whole works? What does the end of the unit look like?

Edit: I should have read Robotics last post twice. Yes a ballast makes more sense.

Surely a ballast isn't a thermal cutoff. Were you just describing the part wrong or are you expecting a ballast to perform as a temperature guard?

No. It itself is not a ballast, but is attached to the ballast box of a recessed fixture. I have the spec sheet here and it's being described as a thermal protector. Wiring guide:

"The black lead wire is always connected to the input live wire. The white wire is the common which is permanently connected at the factory with an extra six inch piece of wire of the same color. The third wire of the [thermal protector] is permanently connected to the live side of the load."
