To be sure I can really only blame myself but dang. Somehow my nephew, age less than 2 got a hold of my laptop today. It's incredible, he managed to power it up, and trigger a full system restore. (it's one of the newer laptops that has a restore partition)
I would have sworn that I had logged out, even had I not, the screen saver should have kicked in and locked him out.
So here is the question. I had recently used the settings and files transfer wizard to copy all the relevant files off that laptop with the idea of using the info to setup an account on another computer. I still have the USB drive on which the wizard dumped all the goodies. The info consists of 4 .DAT files. However the wizard is refusing to recognize that any files exist on the usb drive. Total data in the 4 files =~ 7GB.
Anybody know how to unzip the .DAT files created by the wizard?

My main desktop WinXP PC has picked up a habit of forgetting either that there is a screensaver set to kick in, or it forgets that the screensaver is password protected. I often come back to it hours after I left it to find that a quick shake of the mouse wakes it without any sign of a password prompt.

I've got into the habit of pressing Win+L whenever I'm walking away from my PC for any length of time.

Are you able to see the files on the removable hard drive from that computer? Can you copy them locally to the internal drive and read them from there?

And, for those with "mouse addiction", you can create a nice little icon in your tray. Set the target to "%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation". One click, and you are locked.

And if anyone knows the opposite trick for KDE -- how to get rid of the lock icon without also getting rid of the logout icon -- let me know...

Short of writing your own applet (or finding one online somewhere), I don't think it's possible to configure the "lock/logout applet" to only show the logout button.

Yes, the 18GB usb hard drive that I had the FAST wizard write to was elsewhere. AFAIK the folder and the .dat files are intact. It's just that the current wizard won't read them.
I did find this web site. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm I tried those tools on a copy of the data. No Joy.

Oh, those.. I don't normally have those in the panel, but, yes, they do seem to be welded together from a single applet.
Use the Source, Luke..

Looks like this KB896344 is the real deal. Just one of the many hotfix's that were lost in the restore. At least the .dat files are being recognized by the wizard now.
update: This did work. After a fashion. I have all the important files back. It wasn't flawless. Seems FAST unpacks everything into a temp folder in windows/system32. The process failed to move the files from there to my Documents and settings folder. I found them when, on a hunch, I did a global search for a few files. Still have a few applications to reinstall... And where in the heck are my bookmarks.

Don't do that -- see "Rundll32.exe entry points".
