I had a lightning strike that killed a bunch of my toys, including my empeg. I am getting a disk error.

I found a similar post in this forum hinting that there is a stuck bit on the IDE bus and that the ethernet chip may be the real problem. The suggestion was to lift the pin on the enthernet chip. I can do this easily at work next week, if I knew which chip was the correct one. Can someone post a picture for me and make any other suggestions?

thanks,

I don't see anything in that boot log specifically indicating that your player has a "stuck bit on the ethernet chip".

The "No hard disk found" screen can be caused by a whole host of widely varying problems.

There is something wrong with a chip in your player, though:

Fortunately, as is indicated in the FAQ entry, you might be able to work around this issue by installing the latest version of Hijack.

I've gotta say, though, if you got a lightning strike that damaged the player, you got away lucky if the only thing wrong is the CS4231A chip. I'd be careful of other possible failures. For example, its external AC power supply might be fried. Check things out carefully.

Upgrade your Hijack to the latest version, and then capture/post a new boot log from that.

Thanks

Okay, upgraded Hijack and have new boot log.

I have inspected ide connector for bad solder joints and tried the drive on the 2nd connector. Additionally, I have tried the drive out of my old laptop just to see if the empeg would recognize it.

I still have the hard drive error. I lost a router, ethernet switch, laptop, and computer all to the same lightning storm. My empeg symtoms sound similar to this post: http://empegbbs.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/285542/an/0/page/1#Post285542 (at least to my limited empeg knowledge) which is why i was thinking the ethernet controller.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mr.Plow

The empeg's ethernet chip is fried, and unfortunately it is sticking D7 on the data bus that gets shared with the drive(s) and other devices.

If you don't need the ethernet (tunes uploading??), then you could just take an exacto knife and sever that one pin from the SMC ethernet chip, and the rest would probably work.

Otherwise, major chip-replacement surgery is required on the SMC ethernet chip.

Cheers

So which pin needs to be severed?

Any suggestions on where to get a replacement? I can get it installed at work. Anyone out there have a part number and source for a direct replacement?

Thanks again,

Mr.Plow

D7 is pin 63. PM me if you would like a new chip. We have a few.

Hope this helps,
Stu
