Access Empeg from work?

My cars off the road at the moment after someone rear-ended me  Anyway the empeg is plugged into my router and I'm listening to it at home using the http server. My question is, can I access it from work while its plugged in at home? Its probably an FAQ and I've had a look but couldn't see anyhing, sorry! So if someone knows, let me know  Cheers

Should be quite simple, set up port forwarding on the router for the relevant ports (not sure what will be needed?) and then use a service like dyndns to point you to your empeg, this may mean leaving a PC running at home with the dyndns updating client running. Failing that, nip down to Maplins and buy another 12v PSU and take it to work with you Cheers Cris.

My netgear has it built in. Should be nice and simple, the only other thing to bear in mind is security. Opening up ports on your router is like knocking a hole in a wall and adding a door. Of course you can lock a door, but it's not nearly as secure as the wall it replaced. I get all sorts of knobs trying to r00t my boxes at home. I don't think the empeg has had many security rollups recently! Maybe consider building a VPN instead? My netgear has that built in too.

If your firewall can also be configured to only accept inbound connections for the forwarded ports from your work IP(s) then you should be pretty safe IMO.

I used to get this quite often too, it always got stopped, but since the latest firmware update on my Speedtouch 546 (coming from a person who sees ALOT of ADSL routers I have to say this is the best I have found, line wise not feature wise) all that has stopped, it has some level of threat detection built in, even with NAT and the firewall off, so far this seems to be keeping them away form my door, the logs are clean on the firewall box so far
I like the VPN idea too, but would this cause problems with the network set up at his work?
I do remember password support for the web interface at some point ? Or did I dream that?

If you're using the 546 as a passthru xDSL router, then it really should be passing *everything* through. If you are using it's built-in firewall, well, yes it really should block just about everything!
Nice modem, that. I have one here, with v5.3.2.6.0 firmware on it, but would love to find the latest v6 stuff. I wonder if the UK firmware version from BT differs significantly, other than spellings?

I have v6.1.4.7 running. The firewall is turned off in the toolbox menu, but a new section appeared "Intrusion Detection" with the 6.1 update (although the previous firmware was pretty old) which as yet I don't seem to be able to turn off, seems to do the trick, it lists several things it blocks some of which it has counts against. If anyone is interested, I have found DSL Depot a good place to get stuff from, it's all refurb stock, the proces are low but everything I have ever had from them has need perfect, but in slightly damaged boxes. I really feel like I lucked out with this router, I went for it as I figured it would have the Alcatel chipset in it, and my DSLAM card is also Alcatel, I get an extra 1Mbps over the 2wire router I used before. I also find it's rock solid, I never loose sync and my line is a little less than perfect, I really must get around to sorting that out one of these days, I think I have a split pair Edit - Not sure what you mean about the BT firmware? I downloaded mine from speedtouch.co.uk the only custom firmware BT release these days is for their own routers, and BTW avoid the BT HomeHub (shudder!) if you can. Cheers Cris.

Yup, top notch modems. I've tried three other brands here, and none of them would even connect (at any speed). The speedtouch ones (516, 546) not only connect, but synch up at decent (for here) speeds. I'm a long way from the telco central office.

Just for my own interest, approx how far? I am about 4km away and get a decent 4.5Mbps downstream. Here in the UK I have seen our network support dsl at 9-10km but with very high poundage of copper all the way. Just wondering if the telephone network over there is much different, someone told me once that in the US dsl can work on much longer lines? Is it the same in Canada?

I believe at least in New Orleans area we could get DSL at distances up to 30 KM although only at 1.5 MB speeds.
Actually, now that I think about it, it was 19,000 feet, not 19 miles, which is around 30 KM. So we are actually at roughly 5.8 KM from the CO. I believe we were at about the limit for DSL deployment.

Not sure about the infrastructure of our wiring, but yes we are a considerable distance from the CO and get DSL.

We have twisted pair wiring from the C.O. to the house, but it was all installed about 45 years ago, and has lower twist counts than modern stuff.
Plus, the wire from the post to the house is simple flat (untwisted) cable for abou 10m.
We are about 5.8 (?? forgot, sorry) Km from the C.O. The current technology here is generally good up to about 5KM, after which the attenuation on the cable exceeds 60dB and line noise becomes a huge factor.
Current service here is 2.5mb/sec down, with 0.64 mb/sec up. The modem will actually sync at 3.5/0.9 just fine, but line noise then causes frequent resyncs, so the ISP had the telco dial it back a few notches.
My current line profile is attached.

I've seen that program a few times in the past few days since I've been looking at routers for the ADSL2+ which I'm signing up for at my new place. What is it called exactly? Is it brand specific? I couldn't seem to google it. My search-fu is weak today...
For the record the Billion modems/routers get a pretty good rap here in Australia.

That was in VMware, although you've now reminded me that I ought to have tried it in wine first!
The Linux version doesn't draw the graph in as high a resolution, though I have wired it up on my webserver for easy checking.
