Sad, he did a lot for wild animal protection in his country.

From what I saw of Mr Irwin it seems like just the sort of humour he would have appreciated.

If someone went to the effort of parodying the reporting of my death I'd consider it a pretty bloody big complement. I doubt many of the other 152,999 people that died today received such a thing.

All I can say is what a freaky accident. I've been hit by a stingray, and while it hurt like a mother, it didn't even make me sick. But being stabbed in the heart, wow. Horrible luck.

Apparantly they have video of him pulling the barb out but it was too late as the poison had already entered his system. He went into cardiac arrest right after.
I suppose these things happen when you're filming "Things in the ocean that can kill you"

Except he wasn't filming that:
Quote: Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest" with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, according to Irwin's manager and friend John Stainton. But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, Stainton said, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.
Also, "As of 1996, 17 deaths had occurred worldwide from stingray barb injuries." That's a total of 17 from the time records start until 1996. Hardly the deadliest thing in the ocean.

Amazing! And after all the other completely insane things he did, that's what got him. Sorry to hear about it.

I like it. Someone who plays with the life of his 3 month old just for straining after effect is just unbearable.

I thought the same, when someone at work said he'd been killed I assumed he'd had his throat ripped out by a croc. I think even he would've been cheesed off by his own method of departure.

That's one tough man right there. He'll be missed.
I can't believe they'll show it on TV. It must be really hard to watch.

The Onion Radio News: Australia's 'The Stingray Hunter' Says 'It Should Have Been Me' http://www.theonion.com/content/node/52346I'm definitely not snorkelling near any stingrays anymore. Lots of them in the lagoon - with people snorkelling around them - when we were on holiday last month. Hugo

If anyone finds the full video of his daughter Bindi's speach, please let me know. I caught it on TV this morning but am only finding clips of it now..
