I just upgraded to dual drives. That seemed to go fine. It works. However, each time I restart the empeg, the playlist that loads isn't the one I was on when I turned it off. The one it defaults to is just blank [-/-] 0:00. I don't believe I have any blank playlists.
I'm not sure what "error 19" means, but I'm including this: ... EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem). empeg-pump v0.03 (19980601) Press Ctrl-A to enter pump...okay Freeing unused kernel memory: 4k initempeg init 0.8 I see this is a developer image! Mounting proc Mounting first music partition Tried to mount /dev/hda4 as reiserfs but got error 19 Mounting second music partition Remounting first music partition read-only Remounting second music partition read-only Press 'q' now to go into development mode. Both drives show their space appropriately. They are the same basic drive other than they were manufactured two months apart in different countries. Here is a fresh boot:

OK, this just in: The only playlist that has this issue is the root playlist, the one that has all songs in it. If I choose a custom playlist, it reboots just fine.

That probably means that you root playlist has more tracks than the player can handle. There is a workaround for this that I can't find at the moment. Someone else will come along soon enough to enlighten both of us.

It is the maxfid patch. I would like to it, but I am too lazy to search for it at the moment...

Yeah, that's number 4 in my list. How many tracks are in your root playlist?
Is it possible that you have multiple trees in the playlist that point to the same songs, and you haven't ignore-as-childed some of them?
For example, do you have one playlist called "artists", and one playlist called "albums", both in the root, and they all link the same songs? That would make your root playlist twice the size of the total number of songs on your player. In that example, to solve the problem, simply tag one of those two playlists with the "ignore as child" tag.
What is the total number of songs in your player?
NOTE: Number 1 in my list still might apply. I was getting that problem before, and it only happened when I tried to initiate a large playlist. Small playlists wouldn't run up against the corruption on my scratch partition, only large ones would.
DO NOT TRY THE MAXFID PATCH until you have tried doing the repair steps I linked in number 1 above.

Also: Don't use copy and paste when you grab your boot log from Hyperterminal. Hyperterminal has a bug that messes up the text when you use the clipboard. Use the CAPTURE TEXT feature instead. Your boot log looks mostly normal, though (trying to peer through the scrambled text at it).

3400 songs is not going to require the maxfid patch. You would need to be generating playlists in the neighborhood of 10,000 to 20,000 songs before you would need that, if I understand correctly. So your problem has nothing to do with maxfid unless a root non-shuffled playlist about 4x self-referential. I'm thinking you need to do the first procedure I linked. Number one in my list above. Regarding your kids: Children's Chewable Valium.
