Ok, since you all have helped me find so many other things that I have embraced in my life, I thought I'd bring this question here as well...

What bath soap do y'all like?

I've experimented with the stuff that Trader Joes sells, but haven't found one that "rocks my world." Have you?

Yes.
A few years ago the company was small enough that you could buy 'bulk' bricks of soap base to mix and cast your own.
I always thought that would be a fun weekend project, but never got to it. Now the bulk packaging is gone.
It's still one of the cheapest 'special' soaps I've found- about a buck a bar... and my money stays in my home state of California!

I was gonna create a "Tyler Durden" account, but when I try, for some reason the BBS keeps telling me I haven't filled out all the required fields. Tom, do you have any idea why it would do that?

Anyway, all kidding aside, find a Lush store near you and go talk to the people inside.

Yes !

I never though soap was something that I would get excited about, but my mum introduced us to the most wonderful hand made soap a couple of years ago.

It had by a woman in the UK called Linda Hamblen, her company (her and her husband) is called Merrywood.

Her soaps are simply amazing, many of them almost smell good enough to taste. I really like the citrus based ones, which make your skin zing.

Unfortunately her website appears to be down:

http://www.merrywood.co.uk/

She supplies via mail order, I see if I can find her contact details later.

She also wrote a book on the subject:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN...5293284-6880418

OK, you’ll think I'm nuts but Dawn dish soap. It actually gets you clean and not just smelling like perfume.

However I wouldn't recommend it if you have dry skin.

Depends on the use!

For bathing (the "vitamins" variety)

For hand washing (bar form only)

I love that Lava bar soap. None of that moisturizer stuff. My hands don't get dry, thankfully, so I've never needed it.

"Grandma's Lye Soap"
written by Johnny Standley and Art Thorsen

Do you remember Grandma's Lye Soap,
Good for everything in the home,
And the secret was in the scrubbing,
It wouldn't suds, and wouldn't foam,

Oh, let us sing right out (sing out!)
For Grandma's Lye Soap,
Sing it out, all over the place!
For pots and pans, and dirty dishes,
And for your hands,
And for your face!

Little Therman, and Brother Herman,
Had an aversion to washing their ears...
Grandma scrubbed them with her lye soap,
And they haven't heard a word in years!

Oh, let us sing right out (sing out!)
For Grandma's Lye Soap,
Sing it out, all over the place!
For pots and pans, and dirty dishes,
And for your hands,
And for your face!

Mrs. O'Malley, out in the valley,
Suffered from ulcers, I understand,
She swallowed a cake of Grandma's Lye Soap,
Has the cleanest ulcers in the land!

Oh, let us sing right out (sing out!)
For Grandma's Lye Soap,
Sing it out, all over the place!
For pots and pans, and dirty dishes,
And for your hands,
And for your face!

I'll be darned! They dropped it for a while and now it's back!
(or maybe I was confused- it can happen)

Ok, that one has me curious. It's clearly a big time tree-hugger soap (no offense meant, I'm a bit of a tree hugger myself), but it's got some kinda voodoo thing going. What's the deal there?

Heh, I can never remember what soap I bought last time, from one visit to the supermarket to the next. The only criterion is that I don't like them parfumed.

I have really sensitive skin, so I get "Pure and Natural" which is a hypoallergenic soap made by the Dial Soap Company. I called Dial because I can't find a seller of this soap where I live and they sent me an entire case for $12 or something like that.

As far as fancy soap is concerned, I use old-fashiond shaving soap with a badger shaving brush (I also shave with a straight razor, believe it or not). I buy that from a company called Green Pond. They resell George F. Trumper and D. R. Harris & Co. products, both of which are excellent. They sell other makers also. Trumper's after-shave lotion is fantastic.

By the way, I got into straight razor shaving because I had tried everything else and had bad skin irritation or ingrown hairs along the collar or whatever. Learning how to do it is difficult. Its not just shaving that is tough at first, but you also need to learn how to properly strop the razor. Anyway, after the ordeal of learning how to use it (lots of little cuts), I am amazed at the comfort and quality of the shave you can get with one of these razors. No more skin irritation, and a closer shave than I was able to get with any other technology including the double and triple-blade saftey razors. The only drawback is that you can't carry one on an airplane anymore, and if you bring it travelling you've got to bring your strop, too.

I learned the proper technique from a 1934 edition of the American Standard Textbook of Barbering, which was hilarious reading. If anyone is intersted, I later found an online resource of the razor care and shaving section of this book.

A second recommendation for Dr Bronner's soaps. I've never used the Peppermint, but I've used others and been really impressed.

I never liked the Dr. Bronner's bar soap nearly as well as the liquid soap.

Hey i'm new around here. i'm considering making my car audio, and home, with better technology. this is why i joined this board, and a few others. i want to get an idea for what an empeg is and if it's worth the effort.

Anyway. What's the deal with a badger brush and a straight razor? Is this for real?

Thanks, and not trying to be a cynic on ya.
