I presume people here have done this. What exactly is trick here for using it on Linux and OS X?

Let's' say I just want to connect with ethernet? Is it just a matter of getting an IP address assigned to the empeg? What's the easiest way to accomplish this? DHCP server?

The most reliable way is to assign a static IP to the empeg -- I find that DHCP on the empeg is not compatible with all network hubs/switches -- especially not with some dual 10/100 mode hubs. So using a static IP helps. The same bug (empeg) also means that one must "ping" the empeg before it begins responding to anything.

Hey.. I just fixed a bug like that for the b44 driver in Linux 2.6.. I wonder if the empeg has the same (or similar) issue.. time to dig..

Cheers

Heh heh.. after looking at "diff -uw" between the empeg's net driver and the latest 2.6 version of the same driver, yes, it may be the same bug. Missing an appropriate netif_wake_queue() in one or more places.

Actually, not a whole lot looks different between the two, so now I have one more thingie for my TO-DO list: back-port a few low-level bits from the 2.6 driver to the empeg driver.

Cheers

OK, I'm still new to networking. How exactly does one assign a static IP to the empeg?

Do I first connect to the empeg with one those serial port utilities, like the terminal program? It's been awhile since I've used those so I'm little rusty. Someone, jog my memory.

You might be trying to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

If your empeg and your computer are plugged into the same network, they should JUST WORK in most cases, assuming the network has got a proper DHCP server. You should be able to just run Jemplode and have it search for the empeg and it should find it.

Only if you have trouble with it, should you need to worry about assigning static IP addresses. To do that, you must use regular emplode on Windows, connect with the serial cable, and use the CONFIGURE PLAYER screen.

More information on ethernet troubleshooting can be found here.

Though it sounds like the problem has been solved, I just wanted to add that I've had no problem running jemplode on OSX or Silicon Graphics workstations. It has always, as Tony said, "just worked".
