Folks: After receiving my copy of "Maximum PC" mag, I was reading thru their "Ultimate MP3 Guide" - basically a review of current MP3 hardware offerings on the market. I was, to say the least, disappointed, that they included the "Neo-35" unit (which rated a 4 out of 10), but ->not<- the Empeg.

How could they not include the Empeg!?!?

I wrote an e-mail off to them, politely expressing my disappointment, and got this reply from Jon Phillips, their Editor-in-Chief:

"Dan, we might just take you up on that. We tried to get the Empeg, but
could not work an agreement with the manufacturer. But I do know our
features editor tried to secure one. Maybe the March cover story will
embarrass the Empeg folks into action. Anyhow, we won't give up. And if
you ever plan on driving down to SF, let me know... we'll do a road
test!"

My offer was to have them come up to Seattle and review mine, in my Camaro. Oh well, no joy there.

Anyway, can anyone here comment on this, and possibly get them a unit to review for a future issue? Jon's e-mail is jphillips@mail.imaginemedia.com.

Just trying to do my part!

Dan

Hate to be the first to reply to my own post, but why don't you folks invite him to your Northern CA meet?

Just sent him this:

Hi Jon,

I'm also Jon. I read on the "unofficial empeg BBS" that you'd like to check out an empeg unit.

I live in Potrero Hill and have a 36 gig Mark II (the latest version).

I'd be happy to help. Would you like me to come by and bring it for your inspection?

Please let me know!

- Thanx

My thoughts exactly. JBauer, get him down there, he'll get a kick out of it!

Just invite him to the meet so he can really see what it's all about!

We no longer work with the press - this is now the responsibility of Rio's press agency. In practice everything is on hold until the official launch of the Rio Car, which should be pretty soon.

Rob, you guys are cool with me setting up a meet with PC Magazine if they want to do it? I don't want to step on any toes...

It's entirely up to you, but I would point out that it isn't the Rio version of the product (and as such will not be available by the time the article is printed). If they want some nice graphics or a loan Rio unit they'll need to talk to our press people (and probably wait a while longer).

Didn't mean to start a war - just trying to make sure that my favorite MP3 player is well represented in the press.

If the editor does go to the meet, I'm sure he'll be bombarded by positive testimonials. Either way, it's all good for Empeg/Rio/Sonic Blue/whatever, right?

Give us on update on this one (for those of us that won't be making it into the meet:( ) I too was very curious as to why the empeg wasn't represented in that month's issue...

I never heard anything back from Jon (the dude at PC) regarding demo-ing my unit...

That's MY update.
