I have a measly 30 gig (more like 27.something) drive space spread across two drives in my Empeg player (Mk2A), and was wondering what is the safe max that I can take take it to without crashing it...Can I load it up full to the max, or should I leave a few meg or a few hundred meg available as 'unused or free' space...

As you get closer to filling it up, you should do your uploads in progressively smaller batches. This will ensure that you don't mess up the database by maxing out the disk at database-rebuild time.

You can safely max out the disk this way, I'm pretty sure, as long as you do it carefully towards the end there.
