Nothing is set in stone yet, but my current plans are Seattle.

Wow- crazy month!

No advice (since I know nothing about Seattle), but contemplating this move has been like hitting a big "reset' button on our life. Don't know if you've felt this way, but as stressful as it is, the idea of such a wide open future is very exciting!

Do you have family in Seattle?

We'll miss you at the bay area meets. I've only visited seattle once and spent a nice day wandering around the downtown by myself and it seemed like a great place to live.

Plus, the end of next month will be positively gorgeous (if my experience was any indication). The most perfect, continuous weather I've ever experienced was in Seattle. For over nine days, every morning it was around 67 degrees, and it warmed up to around 75 at the peak of the day. All nine days had no humidity at all (that's the real releif from Washington D.C.). *Sigh* those were wonderful mornings.

Oh, and I recommend seeing the Sound Garden. The band took its name from a sculpture in the area. Unfortunately, it's on NOAA property, and in recent years they've become really security concious (the terrorists will obviously target NOAA - in Seattle - first), so it's a little difficult to get in, but if you're there at the right time, you can get a visitor pass. I think your family would like it. It sounds very strange. Here's some Google maps of where it's located. The sculpture is merely a bunch of vertical pipes that turn to catch the wind, and create a very cool sound.

Other than that, I'm sure your daughter would get a real kick out of the Seattle Ducks tour, and would also like the troll under Aurora Bridge. Other than that, I can't really recommend many other sites that aren't well known, since I went there mostly on a tour of the sites of the Seattle music scene ("Grunge").

What's the job market look like in Seattle? (I'm pretty flexible, IT, perl developer, programmer in about a dozen different languages, all around tech hacker, writer, forklift operator, once-upon-a-time welder and probably half a dozen other jobs heh).

I'm coming to the conclusion that I probably can't afford to live in the Bay Area anymore, not if I want to buy another house (had to sell my last one when I got divorced) and I've always liked Seattle.

Seattle and the surrounding area is my favourite place on Earth, so far. I would love to be able to live and work there.

According to friends of mine who live there, the secret's gotten out and the housing prices have correspondingly skyrocketed. I believe something similar has happened in Portland.

As far as I can tell, the best "cool place that nobody knows about" must be Salt Lake City. So many (non-Mormon) people are turned off by the Mormon-centric nature of the place that they miss what a great place it is. I had a job offer, way back when, from the U. of Utah, so I gave a lot of thought to the place... and ended up in Houston instead. Sigh.

..cool if you like being ostracised by 85% of the population for having the wrong religion, and like your winter air thicker than LA's! I lived there for three months (loved the skiing), but would never in a million years live in Utah full time. Not much skiing in Texas so if it were Houston v SLC, I'd have to go w/SLC, but that's just me. But hey, different strokes.

Last time I was in Seattle (a few years back) there was a huge glut of commercial real estate sitting empty. Is that still the case or has the commercial market followed the housing market upwards?

Cool tony- I actually moved from Missouri to Tacoma area about 3 months ago now. I love the area very much and love my new job- so I hope you have the same luck. I don't have a lot of contacts here to help you out yet- but I would check Boeing- they are big employers around here. If you don't want to work for the corporate man I would inquire at smaller businesses- banks and mortgage companies are hiring a lot now from what I hear. You could also check out other military contractors besides Boeing- military bases abound in the Puget Sound region and so do military contractors I'm sure.

Actually, it's a pretty darn good match. Perhaps I'll drop them a line.

Any reason in particular that you moved to Seattle?
I've been to the race track (drag racing) many times, but never thought to move there.

haha, someone changed that on me a while back when I flamed alan cox on slashdot about "oh, anyone could write software to do that" and told him if anyone could do it, he could do it and release it. I don't actually hate the guy, I just hate people who claim "buying that product is stupid, because you could make it yourself" when it's not that easy.
