It filters searches based on the proximity to the geographic center of the current place/zoom.

Try typing in something like "hamburger".
Not only did it find hamburger joints, it also found articles about hamburgers from the local newspaper.

The new hybrid view where they overlay the map on the satellite image is awesome.

It's getting better. A few months ago, I asked it for hotels in Big Bear and it came up with only 6, 4 of which were shown in the lake. Now it shows only 4 (and there's gotta be more than 50 there) and none are in the water.

For restaurants around my house, it shows 10 out of more than 30, and one result is a video store.

LOL! Check out the furthest zoom level.

I've been using Google Earth since it came out. It's freaking fantastic. It also works a lot better on my system than Keyhole did, and is easier to use. I also love the "buildings" feature. I was able to show people what the view of the D.C. fireworks would be like from our hotel room. THAT is amazing. And I searched for my friend's old house, and he could see his old car in the driveway because it could be identified by the paint peeling off the roof. That is both creepy and absolutely incredible. Oh, and I never, ever get tired of the zoom from one place to another.

MapQuest offered satelite images for a brief moment about a year ago. I grabbed down as many views of my property as I could at the time.
The Google images don't zoom as close as the MapQuest did- at least for my 'back woods' property.
Max zoom is probably to the same level for habited areas, though.
Not much point in zooming in on shrubs and dirt, I guess.
Other fun with maps is at USGS site:
http://nationalmap.gov/
and there seems to be a few new things over here, too:
