How much would a swimming pool with the following dimensions weigh? 9 foot diameter (round pool), 26 inch water height.
Thanks!
Seems simple enough but I fail to come up with consistent answers. My math would be to multiply the diameter by pi and then that result by the height. The I have to multiply by something else. As I type this I seem to remember pi * r^2 (radius and not diameter!). Aww crap. Gotta run now though. It seems the patio that my friend decided would be a good option is heaving something awful and I might have to let the water go!

Yup pi * r^2 x height = volume. Remembering to keep the units the same.

Water's always easier in metric. Your radius is 4.5ft*30.5cm/ft, or 137.25cm. Your depth is 26in*2.54cm/in, or 66cm. Your volume is pi * 137.25^2 * 66, or about 3.9 million cc, so at 1g/cc the water would weigh about 3.9 metric tons, or 4.3 Imperial tons.

Boy that sounds like a lot. He's just described your typical dime-store plastic wading pool. Sure it's going to weigh 4 tons?

so approximately 4000 kgs or 8000 pounds. That's the most likely figure I got as well. The water is currently draining. I wouldn't let my nephew in that with that much weight resting on a few 4x4 posts.
Thanks!

Water is heavy. I got the same answer doing a quick and dirty cubic foot calculation.
Dime store wading pools are usually less than 12" deep, and more like 4-5' diameter (have to fit in the purchaser's automobile).

Hm. This is about the size you're describing, and now that I actually *see* it in a picture, I could imagine that weighing 4 tons. We reinforced our deck before we put our hot tub on it. More posts and footings. I'm glad we did.

Peter's math is correct, water is surprisingly heavy stuff.

The math seems spot on for how much the water weighs... but how much does the POOL weigh? Yuk Yuk Yuk.

Yes, but the post two items down was so much more interesting: Quote: BREAST OF SHOW: "We're kinda at our wits' end, so it's come to this," says Sheba Love, a protestor from "Breasts Not Bombs" who dropped her top in San Francisco, Calif., to get attention to her message. To help get her message across, she declared herself a size 40D. "But it blows me away that all we have to do is bare our skin and we can cause such a snit," she says. Onlookers were hardly in a snit. "I think it's great!" declared one woman. Police were standing by to ensure the protest was peaceful. Co-protestor Sherry Glaser, size 40DDD, didn't think there would be any problem. "Boobies never hurt anyone," she said. (San Francisco Chronicle) ...Though if they could, a couple of 40DDDs would do it.

Or the post about outlawing streaking in time for the Olympics. Quote: "You can't assume these so-called streakers will always have peaceful intent," he insisted. "We don't want to imagine, for example, what would happen if one had a knife." (AP) ...And where, exactly, sir, might a streaker hide one?
Or may I ask, arn't there already laws about using sharp pointy things in public?

Quote: Or may I ask, arn't there already laws about using sharp pointy things in public?
That was addressed in the June 26 issue:
Quote: ANOTHER SYMPTOM OF THE SAME DISEASE: An editorial in the British Medical Journal has a vital, urgent suggestion for the improvement of public health: pointy kitchen knives must be banned to "reduce knife crime." Laws must be passed, the authors say, to require blunt, rounded knife tips because of a recent rise in stabbings. In the U.S., even the most rabid gun-control advocates ridiculed the proposal. "Can sharp stick control be far behind?" sneered a spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. But the editorial's authors are serious. They say they polled 10 English chefs and "none gave a reason why the long, pointed knife was essential." (New York Times) ...Insert obligatory joke about the inability of the English to cook.
This particular entry caused quite a ruckus on Randy Cassingham's This Is True forum.

Apparently you don't have Chicken Kiev in Britain, or any other stuffed meat dish.

You need a sharp knife for chicken Kiev, but not necessarily a pointed one -- a rounded one would do. However, you definitely need a pointed one for de-seeding chillies halved widthways.

I cant think of a way to cut a pocket in a chicken breast without a pointed knife.
I suppose I'm thinking specifically of the preparation where you actually cut a pocket into the breast as opposed to rolling/bunching it.

Again, a rounded sharp knife would do. You could use a butter-knife, if it were sharp all round the rounded end. Mind you, I guess you could also stab someone with a butter-knife if it were sharp all round the end, so there still wouldn't be much gained.

Oh, I see what you mean. A round-ended knife where the end was still sharpened never occurred to me.
