Empeg repair: Is anyone doing it now?

Dare I ask if anyone is doing empeg repairs now? I've corresponded with Rob many many months ago about getting either one or both of my 2 busted empegs fixed but he hasn't replied back to me in well over 3 months. I'm tired of burning cd's. I know that he was taking some time off and was supposed to be getting back to it at the end of April. It's a month past that and I'm just curious if anyone has heard from him or knows if he's currently working on requests. If not, I think I should just sell these things as they currently do me no good and I could likley find another solution.
Thanks!

I don't know if Rob is starting-up repair service again. Eutronix in the US should be able to help. Mark Lord may be able to help if you're in Canada. I don't know if he's fixing empegs anymore either though.

RobS is the best choice for Empeg repair -- he has access to schematics, original replacement parts, and by far has the most experience of anyone (current) repairing these beasts.
Stu/Eutronix (link at top) also dabbles, and can fix common problems. But troubleshooting capabilities appear limited, due to no schematics and the need to recoup time spent diagnosing things.
I also repair empegs, but encourage people to go elsewhere first, and treat me as the option of final resort. I can diagnose/fix nearly anything, even without schematics. But shipping things to me in Canada can be pricey at the border.

Well stuart had one of them once to replace the CS4231A chip but was unable to get it working again. He didn't charge me anything despite having invested several hours in it. Honestly, I'm just frustrated and want to get something working. I have pictures of the boards somewhere and boot logs too I think. And shipping to Canada can't be 1/2 as bad as going to the netherlands! Rob seemed to think the ide headers and the CS4231A chips were hosed. I'll see if I can dredge up his last email about it.

If you and Mark work something out, I will be crossing the border in two weeks. I can mail it to Mark for you from within Canada.

Boot log of the first unit. This is my main one and was sent back to Rob for repair shortly after I got it due to intermittent Disk Not Found errors. I'll also upload some pics of both units and link to them in a few minutes. This unit is 1st empeg.

Here's teh second log file. This one is the one that Stuart tried to replace the chip on. Well, he did really but it still doesn't work. This one is a spare unit.

Excellent! A model case of how to provide exactly the right information!
But it does look a little ugly. There are definitely "lifted pads" on the IDE header of unit#1 -- a result of the crooked factory solder job, short IDE cables, and possibly a bit much heat from the soldering iron later on. I can fix that.
Dunno about the CS4231A on unit#1 -- it's failing right now, but since it shares the bus with the bad IDE header, anything is possible. But the USB & ethernet also share that bus, and they look okay in the logs. Won't know until the header is fixed up.
The one thing I cannot do is replace large surface mount chips like the CS4231A. I can diagnose them, but lack the steady hand to swap them out for new ones.
Unit#2 looks like it may have three bad pads on the CS4231A -- a couple of them are definitely lifted, and I cannot tell about the third. This I can fix, but whether anything else is wrong, well.. fix what we know about first, and then see what else is still failing.
I suggest you take robricc up on his transport offer, and let him remail them to me on the North side of the border. Getting stuff back to you is easy, it's only the incoming direction that's tricky here.
There are a couple of ways we could tackle this.. I basically only fix units when I have time and feel like it -- that way the job is done well, but timing then becomes quite unpredictable.
One way is I can offer you one good working Mk2a in trade for the two duds. You keep your drives, I keep my drive. Then someday I might fix one or both of the dead units, at my own risk.
Or I could diagnose/fix them as best I can, and you pay whatever we agree upon for a fee once that happens. Normally I charge around US$100 for attempting severe repairs, or more if it takes an inordinate amount of effort.
On the plus side, those are NOT the worst units I've seen (and fixed) to date. But they're up there.
Cheers

I think I may hold the record for having the worst unit...We'd have to ask Rob S. as he has had the unit for months now, and is still tweaking on it...Of course, since I had a backup machine, I told him to take his time, as repairs to single machine owners would come first (gotta have the tunes, man!
All in all, if Rob can fix the unit without me having to take out a second mortage, he'd be my hero!

Hi. I'm here. I am still doing repairs.
I have a new job and finally have a flat, rather than a hotel, which means it will be possible to do repair work again. I have already brought over a large amount of spares and my tools, so I will be posting when I am ready to go again. Watch this space!

One possibility: to save on costs, you could pass the units to someone visiting the empeg User meet in a few weeks time. You need to get organising immediately.
I now have access to a microscope and a QFP chip removal kit, plus I have a fair number of CS4231A chips.
Don't loose heart, Charles! What happened to cbarbour?

cbarbour still works. I just switched to the more common way of reaching me. cbarbour is my work email.
Guess I need to figure out how I want to proceed now. Any idea if you could give me a realistic idea of when you can repair my units? Don't worry about trying to make me happy, just let me know how long you think it will be before you can really get to them.
That will help me determine which way to go.
Thanks! Glad to hear things are smoothing out for you too...

Say Rob.. when are you going to be in Montreal next? I'll be there (down the road 2 hours from here) on June 15 for a VMware seminar -- attendies get a free license, so I figured "why not!".

I'll be there the weekend of the 11th for the Montreal Grand Prix. I'm not so into F1, but I'll probably have a good time. There's also casino gaming around, so that always makes a trip better...

Rob, Would that work in reverse? If you have a machine ready, would you give it to someone to bring back to the states and mail from the states to the states? Would that save any significant money? Assuming your bill was paid, of course! Just wondering.

The amount of time it takes to do repair work I won't estimate: I simply proceed carefully to do the repair properly and tot up the time. I appreciate that there is the risk that this could turn into a huge bill - but I don't allow this to happen, by various means. The idea is to get the unit repaired, not bankrupt the owner. As to when I can look at the unit: I originally said that I would be able to start work again at the start of April. For various reasons (some of which will come clear in the next month or so) this has been delayed. I have all the repairs I was working on in January here with me with all my spares and tools, and "sometime soon" I will post here to let people know what's happening. So have a little more patience, don't give up hope and - above all - don't even think about binning your beastie: I havn't been beaten by one of these yet

Thanks for the update Rob. I was beginning to worry that mine was a lost cause too. I'll wait a little longer.

I phased that poorly. I meant to ask when you would be able to start looking at the units. Not a completion date. I'm just curious if it's going to be something you could start on relatively quickly or if it would take you 2 months to even begin to look at it. Does that clarify my question a bit? Thanks! I'm going to bump this up to the top again. I just sent Rob an email but if he doesn't get around to replying, perhaps this will help elicit a response. If not, I think I'll see if Mark would still be interested in repairing or swapping them.

Just so you know, I have recently asked ML if he could do a 'header job' on my back up player, and he said he was too busy. But he may mean just too busy for mine. He may have time for yours...If not you may want to try Stu if you are not too concerned about the cost.

Yes, I'm a bit backlogged in the repair department right now (and my own custom home dock just now stopped functioning -- likely the internal power supply died -- so that also now wants my attention.
I can still offer the two-bad-ones for one-good-one (no drives in any) immediate exchange, though.
Cheers

Well screw it. I'm tired of having a hole in my dash and people asking me if I got ripped off. I'll take you up on your offer Mark. I'll shoot you mail in a bit.
Thanks!

Someone apparently posted then deleted a message and I'm tired of seeing this thread marked as unread. Thus this post.
