I have need to hook into a device via serial and configure it today and it is inconviently located. A notebook would be the best solution for this but unfortunatly I lack a working USB->Serial converter, and my two notebooks are both legacy free. So, I'm pondering what it would take to use the empeg for this. I'm thinking using the ethernet port to log into the empeg, then going back out over the empegs one serial port to the device.

With this in mind, what would be the easiest way to do this? I know I'd need a terminal program on the empeg like minicom, anyone know where an ARM compiled version is? I know I'd also have to add the telnet server to the empeg to get in via ethernet. The last piece of the puzzle here is how well the empeg will work in this config, since it uses the serial port already for it's console port.

Thanks for any info on this.

The problem is what you really want is a terminal server. I know, because I want the same thing.

But, assuming you're willing to log in and do stuff from the empeg, this will work.

Should work just fine, so long as the player app isn't running at the same time.

cheers

Can't he abandon the serial port from the app by using the hijack menu setting and restarting?

I've had good luck with this, and it seems to be readily available at brick-and-mortar stores. Even if it's too late for you now, it might be a good idea to pick one up for the future. I don't think it's currently Linux-compatible though.

Yeah, it is. Sorry. There seems to be some talk that newer versions are not the same as old versions that did work. Anyway, YMMV, but it seems to work pretty well for me under Windows, and the usbserial module for Linux works with at least some of them.

Probably a lot more trouble than it's worth. Most other devices want flow control on their serial ports, and the empeg's serial port doesn't like flow control. Also, you'd potentially run into RX/TX reversal issues that mean you'd need to solder a cable special for the job.

You're most likely best off finding and buying one of those USB->Serial converters.

Or a BT to Serial adapter that you could also use with your Empeg.
