1) I have a feeling mine also does this.
2) The reiserfs line is normal and has always been there.
3) Not so sure about the hdc.

Have you tried doing a small sync yet? I think you might be OK regardless of those messages.

Edit: Well yeah I walked away for a bit before hitting post...

Greetings!

Okay. The music partition is fine. The warning is happening with the root filesystem. Do you have any software running (third party) that is keeping the / filesystem open when you try to sync? It is not labeling it as dirty... Hmmm...

I would try the "fsck -fay /" again, but I am not sure it will help...

Great! The problem seems to be gone since after the manual disk check procedure!
I'm glad to know that those are not relevant errors. Thank you all! For the recors, I am running Alpha7+Hijack 329, and no other software.

Alpha 7? You may want to grab the most recent alpha.

I remember Alpha8 having a problem with EQ, which used to produce really bad noise when adjusted. Was this fixed on Alpha9? I remember I had some issue with that too, but since I can't remember precisely what, I'd be happy to give it a try once more, if the eq bug is not there any more.

Alpha 9 was definitely bad. The download page (http://www.empeg.com/v3alpha) specifically says not to use it.

I use Alpha 8 but don't use the eq much (at all really). The main problems I have are:
- tracks get randomly marked.
- bookmarks are very flaky.
- too may tweak order functions cause hangs at the end of the current track sometimes.

In terms of crashing and general stability, it's pretty good really. Basically it's the only way I can play oggs and also have the cross fade.

Alpha 7 didn't seem to save the running order properly which was hugely annoying for me.

Ok, I am now thinking there must be some other problem here.

It seems that every time I do a Sync "after a while", the process stops when uploading the playlists. The Sych eventually times out. So I need to go through this:

ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile sync

as you suggested, everything seems to be ok and I can upload all the mp3s I need to: some times 2 mp3s, some times 3 or 4 albums.

Then weeks pass by, and when I try to upload mp3s, I'm back at the beginning. I can't figure out what this can be.

I am using emplode 2.00 final with Alpha 7. Now that I think about it, could that be a problem? As a matter of fact, I've been doing this since I installed Alpha7, until very recently, when I upgraded to a 100Gb drive. Since that time on, I've been going through the problem described above.

Any help is appreciated, of course. Thank you in advance.

Edit:
In emplode, I get this error when "Uploading PLaylists":
Task: initializing
Warning: %anyplaylistname% could not be synchronized., Connection timed out (Error 0x8004003e)

"Estimating Trasnfer Size" completes successfully.
"Uploading Tunes" instead gives me the same error as "Uploading PLaylists"

This happens with Ethernet connection. I am realtively sure it happened in USB too, but I may be wrong since I very rarely use USB.

The sync timeout was taking very long to occur for each song, and I was uploading 13 tracks. I am at work and I had to stop the syc brutally by turning off the player

Now, just in case it helps, here's what the player says at reboot:

When I reapplied power (after killing emplode), the player of course rebuit the database.
Thrying to rule out emplode 2.0 from the possible problem souces, I decided to use Jemplode (latest version) and see what error I would get.

After starting Jemplode, the serial output on the player was:

I have no clue what it means?! A fid file named "2" ? If so, why would it be a problem and how can i solve it?

I also tried to sych with Jemplode before going through the

ro
umount /dev/hda4
umount /dev/hdc4
swapon /swapfile
fsck -fay /
fsck -fay /dev/hda4
fsck -fay /dev/hdc4
swapoff /swapfile sync

procedure. As usual, checking media was required, and the album I was uploadeng was eventually added to the root and not to the playlist I chose. There definitely is something weird here.

fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda4

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

empeg:/empeg/bin#

Recycled power, and it rebuilt the database again.

I started Jemplode. It rebouilt the database. Then it complained I had no fid n. 2.
I could then upload a number of tunes without any problem. However, from the serial port output, I got this:

Still, on the UI of jemplode all seemed ok.

Then, I tried to uploade more tunes, and the first playlist stopped at 20%, as I coul read in jemplode. Now, it is there, sopped. I am trying to wait until I get some error. I will have to go through the entire file system check again. I think there is some problem with alpha7/ethernet.... I don't think it is cabling, since this happened with different cables in different locations.

If you're getting errors from fsck when checking /, you should reapply the upgrade image, and then try again.

It's possible that your hard disk is on the way out, however.

I'll try that, Roger. Thanks.

For the record, after getting those errors on fsck -fay / , I fsck -fay / again an no errors showed. I suppose they were fixed?

On the filesystem metadata level, probably. However the "fixes" might have corrupted the player binary and other stuff, so it's safest to reapply the upgrade image.

Isn't there a version 2.10 of emplode that is supposed to be used with 3.0 alpha, not 2.0?

I've had similar problems with my units running v3alphas. Switching between emplode 2.0. emplode 2.1, and jemplode seemed to be part of the events leading up to it. Now I stick just with jemplode 69.0...1 and the biggest issue is that sometimes it stalls at the 20% point of the first update.

Isn't there a version 2.10 of emplode that is supposed to be used with 3.0 alpha, not 2.0?

The only improvements in 2.10 are support for the newer file types. Other than that, it's actually less stable -- something broke, and I didn't manage to fix it. Unless you need to upload FLAC or Ogg files, use 2.0. If you do need to upload FLAC or Ogg files, use JEmplode.

I just re-applied the Alpha7 on my empeg, and at the end I got this error:

Error "Could'nt Find Pump" occurred during stage 0x20 .

Wha does this mean?

However, my empeg seems to be working fine, and all playlists are there.

FAQ

Your upgrade probably didn't get applied properly.

The long selftest will tell all.

The older error logs indicate one bad sector at around the 100MB mark on the disk. The other messages are less clear, but it does seem that this drive has been used in another computer (other than the Empeg) at some point.

Cheers

Mark, that is comforting.
As to the fact it was used somewhere else, that is instead a surprise. I bought it as new few months ago. And, I would have been happier without the bad sector.
Well, as long as it works well and for long time on my empeg, and the bad sectors don't increase in number, I'm happy enough.

Thank you!
