I figured it was legit, I was just wondering if it's a new technique that NASA came up with.
From your link:
Quote: So-called "PROTO" imaging is now relatively routine. But in order to eke out the most possible resolution from the Mars Orbiter Camera, Malin Space Science Systems added another component of motion. "The 'c' in 'cPROTO' stands for planetary motion compensation. While Mars Global Surveyor is pitching, rolling, and moving along its orbit, Mars is rotating underneath it (just as Earth is rotating right now, as you read this, such that the Sun, Moon, and stars appear to move in the sky). The pitch and roll of Mars Global Surveyor are timed in such a way as to account for the rotation of Mars, as well as the desired image resolution and target location."

Dunno. In less fancy language, it sounds like they're "just" getting rid of motion blur on the fly, so they get a crisper image that needs less filtering as a result.

Oh, you mean they're "panning" as they shoot the photos? Like sports photographers have been doing for decades?

Except that they are spending billions of dollars to do it

Yep, panning at over 100 miles per second, by remote control, in 6 or 7 dimensions (3 spacecraft translations and rotations, plus the planet rotation)... A tiny fraction of a percent error means you miss the whole thing. Just knowing where the goddamn thing is accurately enough to do this is amazing.

LOL @ tfabris and l0ser. That's a mental picture perfect for a Canon commercial or something. Or a Campbells commercial?!

The only fly in the ointment is that after getting the photo you have to play catchup to get the next. Thus bypassing a bunch or real estate.
