Copied from my LiveJournal, which I think none of you read, so it's new to you!

I have a sets of scans which are pieces of a whole picture. For the sake of argument, let's say there are 4 pieces of each item, which I'd like to paste together.

So, I tried pnmstitch. It couldn't handle it, and I got a blurred join.
Fine. So I tried the Video Orbits (Comparametic Toolkit) method. There wasn't enough overlap in the images, apparently, and I lost. Well, crap. Fine.

So I found "Photomerge" in Photoshop 8 Creative Suite. Great, right? Wrong. It still gives a blurry joint instead of reprojecting or stretching or whatever it needs to do.

Ok, surely there's a way to solve this. What is it?

Maybe I'm being silly, but isn't it simply a case of creating a new canvas the same size as the complete photo will be, and then paste them all into it as layers and line them up yourself? I do this with PSP all the time. Free download from www.jasc.com

Sorry if I'm way off the mark.

Phil

I don't want to line up 4 images myself, for hundreds of groups of 4 images.

I've tried third-party and freeware tools for this, and haven't found any that are as good as the PhotoStitch application that ships with Canon cameras. It's the only useful piece of software they include. I'm not sure how to obtain it without buying a Canon camera.

Ask a Canon camera owner?

Make that obtain it legally without buying a Canon camera.

You've got a linux box... http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=7295

I haven't tried any of the referenced stuff. I suspect that if the Gimp module (Pandora) works well enough that it could be easily scripted.

I have a Canon camera. right, that's the other thing. I have MacOS, and I have Linux. Windows solutions: also sucky.

Try Panaroma Tools?

Not unless it now knows how to select control points. It didn't before. If I have to click, that's not automatic.

There is a version of Canon's PhotoStitch for OSX. I've tried at least 10 different tools and it always gave the best results with the least effort.

i wonder if i know where my CD is. Well, worst case, I bought 3 S45s all at once, and gave 2 of my siblings the other 2. I bet one or another will know where the CD is.
