After years of flawless service, my player has finally developed a problem. Here are the givens..

True empeg player
Version 2.00 software
2nd HD added last year
Latest HiJack software

Here is the problem. This morning I get in the car to come to work. Turn it on, it boots. I see the HiJack logo, see the animations, and get the "Loading databases" and other messages. The system gets to the "Loading Visuals" message and then the screen goes dark, as it should. The standby light (is that what it is called?) in the upper right over the volume knob is blinking normally. Then, the system reboots starting at the "Loading Databases" message. It loads all the other modules and blanks after loading the visuals. Small pause and then repeats. Over and over.

No response from any button pressing, and it does the same here at my desk plugged in to the AC adaptor.

I have noticed that the battery icon (low power?) has been active the past few days.. its hot here in Texas and when my car runs the AC it seems to drain the voltage thus activating the battery icon. Has something fried inside?

The drives spin, I can hear them. If a cable had unplugged I would think the player would give me a message saying the drive was not found but I dont get that message.

If it IS something electrical then I am pretty much screwed I figure, not an easy thing to track down, not fix. Any ideas?

Problably worth connecting up the serial port outside of the car and seeing what the boot messages are. Post the boot log once you've got it. You can just capture it from hyperterm.

If possible, post a complete boot log. I suspect that there is some problem (hard drive?) and that a boot log will show what program is crashing. Do you see the same symptoms when on AC power?

I figured that a boot log would be requested.. I can do that, but I need to wait until I get back home. I dont have a serial cable that I can use here at work and I am a computer guy. How sad is that?!

Yes, same symptoms on the AC adaptor, only the pause between boots is shorter.

I suspect my second drive may not be spinning. Its hard to tell without cracking the case but again, that needs to wait until I get home. I just dont have the tools I need here.

Life really sucks without an empeg, ya know?

I am not certain about the second drive spinning... You should be able to start the player in that case, load the config.ini, etc. The only issue would be if the active playlist was going to a file on the bad drive, and you could get past that with a "player -i" (if I remember correctly).

Hmmm... No null modem cable... Hmm...

-- end of boot log --------

That was three of four 'reboots' worth. I do see some memory error type messages that I am not real fond of.. if I remember, is not the memory surface mounted on this puppy? Not easy to replace, like a simm or dimm would have been. This is becoming a big suck!

Hmmm... This is not that bad, from the look of it. Boot the player, but as soon as you start loading the player application, hit "q" to drop out to shell. Another option would be a "control-c". Then, try running the player application with "player -i". I suspect a corrupt file or playlist.

Hmm.. I guess I am an idiot today. Now I cant get Hyperterm to display ANYTHING for me. I have 115200-8-N-1-None set. Those are correct, are they not? I could swear thats what I used to get the boot log..

That sounds correct. Is it recognizing the player in car mode (switching to the other serial port and speed)? Perhaps a physical disconnect / reconnect to the serial port?

No, the player is not booting in car mode.. and I switched COM ports thinking a physical reconnect was in order. No go.

Its as if echo ro something in hyperterm is turned off. I was banging on the keyboard at one point and I got the reboots to stop.. as if the player responded to the letter 'Q' to enter the shell. But without a hyperterm display I cant do much so I unplugged and started over.

I know you said that you did not have a cable previously. Assuming you found one, could the cable be a problem / loose connection? If hyperterm is the problem, did a reboot of your machine help? (I know, you should not have to do that, but...)

In theory, as long as the player has a developer firmware and is listening to serial, you just need to hit Ctrl-C until it stops rebooting, and then type "exec player -i" (without the quotes) and hit return. This shouldn't be too arduous to do blind (if you mistype, hit Ctrl-C again and start again).

OK.. good news.

I dropped to the shell and ran 'player -i' as you suggested and I am back to a complete boot. I just tried it out in the car and it works. I have to do a few little tweeks on some settings it seems but at least my ride home will not be silent!

I owe you guys many beers big time for the help!

Just out of curiosity, what exactly does the 'player -i' command do anyways?

Cool!

player -i starts the player application with a blank playlist. If you have a corrupted file playing, it is a precaution to let you restart ignoring the presets.

Thats good to know. So when I get home I can probably add some music and do a clean sync and I should be good to go then..

For the record, I had to close Hyperterm and restart it to fix the display hyperterm problem. I didnt reboot my computer or anything, but I did switch serial ports.

I am just happy to be back!

At this stage, you should also be able to stop and restart your player without any issue. If you happen to remember the name of the song or playlist that last played / it locked up on, that would be a good thing to check. You might want to verify that the file is not damaged.

A word on robustness...
That problem with reboots reminded me of Spirit Mars rover at the beginning of its mission
Let's hope the new v.3 player doesn't have this flaw.

No.

As said in the FAQ Entry that Paul linked, the player was rebooting because it hit a bad track. The next time the player tries to play that track it will do the same thing. You must locate the bad track and remove it.

If you don't have a clue which track it might be, start going through the list and looking for garbage you downloaded from filesharing services.

As a matter of fact I do remember the song that is invalid, so removing it wont be a problem.

I read the link that was referenced but guess I missed that part in my haste. Trying to debug my player while at work is probably not the smartest thing to do.. it was hard to devote 100% of my attention to it. But no matter now, its fixed.
