Problem (Freeze) uploading playlists...

hi, the last week i've installed a new 60GB HITACHI Travelstar Hard Disk side by side my existing 20GB IBM Travelstar. Because of the software and the configurations present in the previous 20GB HD system, i've installed the new one as slave thoughtfully following the F.A.Q. over riocar.org. Everything seems to go smooth uploading new tunes (i've uploaded 10GB of new tunes without problems, i can play it) but i've problems uploading playlists, in other words, when i sync after altering a tune/playlist name, position or info, emplode freezes when "Uploading playlists...". If i wait (10-15 mins) it says in warnings: "Initializing Massive Attack could not be synchronized, Connection timed out (error 0x8004003e)" with Massive Attack as example of playlist altered. I've to say that i don't have this error all the times, but in 70-80% of playlist sync. I'm using Alpha 7 software, Hijack 395 and Emplode 2.0, i've got the same problem with Emplode 2.10 and i've also used the fidsift.sh script without success. I've this error in serial console every time i sync:
Adding Swap: 16596k swap-space (priority -1) e2fsck 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 ext2fs_check_if_mount: No such file or directory while determining whether /dev/ hda4 is mounted. e2fsck 1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 ext2fs_check_if_mount: No such file or directory while determining whether /dev/ hdc4 is mounted.
but i don't know how to solve it. Do you think is the cause of the sync problem ? Ideas for a solution ? Thank you very very much.

Question: were you trying to build / upload a lot of playlists at the same time? I am talking about an entire disk worth? If so, I have run into this a few times. For some reason, emplode has a limitation with the number of playlists that can be created on the player during one sync. It will then crash after that point.
If not, and you are just trying to upload one playlist, then I would look at the source playlist.
Used fidsift without success? What happened???
The errors on console are not really a problem. It just means that you are checking if the filesystems are mounted.

hi, thank you for the reply, i've the same problem even uploading one playlist. About the fidsift.sh i mean that i still have the freeze problem, even with a "fragmented" fids structure. I don't have to care about the fs checking warning ? thank you.

Well, that is a check_if_mount. I do not think that should have been a problem... So, even with fidsift (and hijack?) you are still seeing problems. Do you see any other evidence of disk problems during playback? Also, are you running any other third party software from one of your filesystems - sometimes, if a file is open or busy it will not allow a sync because it cannot unmount / remount the filesystems. Something to check...

The ext2fs_check_if_mount failures can be ignored. They occur because there is no /etc/mtab on the player - since /etc is on a file system that is read-only for the vast majority of its life /etc/mtab cannot be created/modified when the other filesystems are mounted. All of the empeg mount scripts include the '-n' option so that they don't attempt to write /etc/mtab.

I don't have any kind of problem during playback and never had problems before the 60GB upgrade. With the 20GB HD only (and the same software configuration: alpha 7, hijack 395 and emplode 2.0) i've never seen something like that. i've nothing running during the sync (i've just discovered emphatic but it doesn't work for me, when i start it, i've millions of "line 452rc setgeom: -1," messages in console and nothing happening, so i'm not running it). I don't know if will help but during the freeze the player shows the "synchronizing" logo until I hard reset it (unplug the current). thanks.

Can you try the following, and let me know what the results are?
umount /drive0 umount /drive1 umount /dev/hda4 umount /dev/hdc4
I just want to make certain you can cleanly unmount the filesystems. After this is done, simply reboot the player to return to a normal state or run the following to perform a disk check (might take an hour or so):
swapon /swapfile fsck -fay /dev/hda4 fsck -fay /dev/hdc4 fsck -fay /

Might need to "umount -n /drive0" etc or it will complain about /etc/mtab.

I have had this same problem since going to version 3. It got progressively worse. I can NEVER complete a sync now without having it have to do a fsck or whatever that is. Can't even like alter the config without an error an fsck. Have tried USB, ethernet, jemplode, emplode 2.00 and 2.10. It seems to be a problem with v3 that only happens to some people

I'm getting this a lot on my alpha 3 player. It seems I can either upload music or alter playlists. If I try both, the player hangs and requires a media check.

I had to tweak the reservecache setting otherwise i lost on every sync to 3alpha7 and later, due to its higher memory needs.

What setting do you have? This player only has a 10gb drive in it.

My problem with syncing on version 3 alpha seems more related to deletes or moving things in the playlist, it usually works fine if I am only adding stuff. Either way, when it doesn't work, it fails on uploading playlists taking a really, really long time, then ditto for uploading files. My solution now is that when uploading playlists is taking too long and I know it is going to fail, is to pull the power on the Empeg and restart it. This causes emplode to fail right away. The Empeg takes a while to boot up because it has to rebuild the database. Once the Empeg has finished booting, I just hit sync again on emplode and it usually works fine this time though I have had to repeat it more than once on a few occasions but I find it much easier and faster than doing the manual rebuild.

This is becoming increasingly frequent with mine, as well. Simply, jemplode (or emplode, which I stopped using few months ago) won't receive any sign of life from empeg when Synchronizing. Then I have to fsck. I don't find any corelation between what operations are being performed. Sometimes I'm uploading tunes, other times I am altering playlists or updating track data, other times both. File trasnfers (via ethernet) always complete successfully. Then, when rebuilding database, I get these errors in jemplode: Code:
... irs=[class org.jempeg.nodestore.PlaylistPair[] of length 2]; tagName=genre] SynchronizeQueue.enqueue (80 changes): replaced [FileInfoDatabaseChange: name=Erebel Playlist from the 80s; node=[FIDPlayl bel Playlist from the 80s; fid = 8240; childCount = 2]; fid=8240; attempt=0; length=5000; oldValue=; newValue=Various; des =Update Erebel Playlist from the 80s; playlistPairs=[class org.jempeg.nodestore.PlaylistPair[] of length 2]; tagName=genre FileInfoDatabaseChange: name=Erebel Playlist from the 80s; node=[FIDPlaylist: Erebel Playlist from the 80s; fid = 8240; ch = 2]; fid=8240; attempt=0; length=5000; oldValue=; newValue=Various; description=Update Erebel Playlist from the 80s; pla rs=[class org.jempeg.nodestore.PlaylistPair[] of length 2]; tagName=year] Retry #0 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #1 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #2 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #3 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Desperately trying to restart the connection before we give up ... Retry #4 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #5 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #6 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #7 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #8 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #9 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #10 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #11 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #12 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #13 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #14 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #15 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.) Retry #16 failed. (Failed to receive packet from device.)
at which point I'm forced to power off the empeg. Upon restart, unless I do a fsck in the console, I get stuck with very long media checks at EVERY sync from jemplode; so I have to go to console and do fsck. Basically, everytime I update the empeg content, if I get unlucky (it happens to me one every five syncs, on average), I end up with on-hour long fsck.

What reservecache value are you using?

I never seem to get a good sync with JEmplode -- messes up my playlists. and I don't use MS-Windows, so Emplode never gets used much here either. Fortunately, most of my tunes are already on the players, and my shells scripts (Linux) mostly still work.
Cheers

Quote: Then, when rebuilding database, I get these errors in jemplode:
Which player version are you using? 2.0 final or 3.x Alpha?
If you are using the alpha, that's probably why. I got lots of synch and database rebuild errors when I used the alpha. Try rolling back to 2.0 and see if that fixes it.
If you're already using 2.0 final, then I'm not sure what the issue is...
