Rio Receiver won't see HSX-109

OK, got the new Rio Receiver today and when put in the place of an existing rio receiver the unit appears to get an ip address and recognize the gateway fine but for some reason does not "see" the HSX-109.
What's up with that? I need a quick response if possible so I can exchange it before Tiger runs out.
Thanks,
Jerz

Try:
- Rebooting both units (receiver: Repeatedly press power button, HSX: switch on back).
- Verify old receiver really does work in the spot for the new receiver with same cabling etc.
- Check cabling and network jacks for problems.
- Check network settings on HSX to see if anything is goofy (like only dishing out one address?)
- See if it works plugged straight into the HSX with HPNA wire.

OK, I tried everything you said and even tried this new unit in two other locations where I have a functioning receiver and get the same results the new unit appears to get an ip address and that's it. I plug the other units back in and they immediately recognize the server so I think there is something up with this thing. All of my existing units have version 1.03b and this new unit is version 1.04
To learn what version this new unit was I loaded the audio receiver manager software and connected directly to the receiver with a crossover cable. The new unit booted up and recognized the music on the computer and even played it. Although the receiver did display some tracks that no longer existed on this computer (so it obviously would not play those).
Is there a problem with the new firmware in the receivers and the HSX? There sure appears to be. Anyone else running a 1.04 receiver with an HSX-109?
Thanks again.

Interesting.
Wonder if it's simply a question of upgrading the HSX's software?
HEY EMPEG GUYS! Got any ideas?

To use the new stock of Rio Receivers with HSX-109, you need to update the HSX-109 software to version 1.10.
Um, I'll look into how people are expected to do that. Be right back,

v1.10 is about to become a Release Candidate. We will release it to the online update server and our support web site when QA complete their approval process.

Thanks guys! I will patiently wait and not send it back. Besides, I've got no where to put it right this second anyway (without running some more cable and getting a pair of speakers).

Nothing but support for the rebadged Dell receivers.

I have had a dell branded receiver for a while now and it has 1.03b why would the new rebadged ones have 1.04 if nothing is different? Is there a way just to flash 1.03b to the rebadged receiver if nothing is different?

if nothing is different
Did I say that?
I said nothing was different, other than support for the rebranded Dell boxes.
Rebranding requires a different software build -- the bootup logo had to be changed, primarily.

Rebadged also means that it doesn't come up with the Dell logo anymore. All the changes are just to ensure that the branding stays consistent, there are no other code changes. They are re-flashed for this purpose.

Was that the sound of someone at SB wishing the Receiver had been coded to only show the logo after booting from the second kernel...

So it says "dell" even if it's not plugged into a network? Mmm, that'd sound like one which didn't get upgraded correctly/at all... does it start with "dell" then change to "rio" during boot?
Have you ever had pre-1.04 software on your PC?

I had been running the Rioplay receiver kernel, so when I went back to 1.03 it was still booting as a Dell. Just loaded the new software.
I briefly swapped to the 1.04 regular receiver kernel it now powers up as a Rio. I'm assuming that flashed it, as it now says Rio even after a long unplugged poweroff.

Mmm, no. None of the 1.04 software reflashes anything, which is why I'm confused that the ROM kernel said Dell for you!
If you'd made a 1.04 (rebadged dell) unit say "dell" by using a rioplay kernel, that I could understand - it would start by saying rio, then switch to "dell" when it'd loaded the 1.03 kernel from your NFS server.
Rebadging involved flashing a new ROM kernel without the dell logo.

Ok heres what actually happens:
Boot time searching logo is Rio.
once it finds the server it sez Dell loading
then the kernel logo appears (rioplay at the moment)

Yep, that's what'll happen if you run a 1.04 flash unit with a server that replies to 1.04 server location requests, but replies with a 1.03 image (with a dell logo in it).
That's not unexpected, that's just not using the software that comes in the box.

Any more word on when/if the HSX-109 will support the rebadged Receivers?
If not: Is it possible to take my dell CD and reflash the rebadged receiver so it thinks it's a "DELL" again? Putting 1.03b back onto the Receiver?
Thanks.

I hope I'm not stepping outside of my NDA to say this, but the current beta of the HSX-109 software runs the rebadged units just fine. I have been running this beta for a while, and it's been quite stable. I think Rio should release it as an official upgrade.
(If they haven't done so already, that is... Have you done the "check online for software updates" thing on your HSX-109 recently?)
If not: Is it possible to take my dell CD and reflash the rebadged receiver so it thinks it's a "DELL" again? Putting 1.03b back onto the Receiver?
All of the software comes from the server, I don't think there's anything you can do to "flash" the receiver.
Question: Is the "dell units don't work with HSX" solely a problem in the "receiver.arf" file? Or does it require server code changes, too? In other words... Could he just take the receiver.arf file from his 1.04 PC installation, burn it onto a CD-ROM, and use the shell prompt on the HSX (with a USB keyboard) to grab the file and put it onto the HSX?

Yes. The v1.04 clients send out a different service discovery GUID, to make sure that they get the v1.04 software -- which ignores the Dell-bit in the flash and treats it as a Rio Receiver (except with the screen the other way up).

Well, that is definately good news!

Yes, actually I've been doing that weekly since November; most recently checking yesterday...
OK, well I'm glad to know that something is actually out there that works...I'll just have to wait some more.

Any further updates to this. I have a similar problem with the HSX-109 not communicating with a receiver (which I purchased off of e-bay) and since SonicBlue is in bankruptcy, I don't anticipate help from them. I keep checking the download new software with the HSX-109 but keep getting nothing. What is the most recent version because my HSX-109 says 1.02?

Well...rumor has it that there is an update that was released for beta testing that would fix the problem for the rebadged Dell receivers (these are easily identifiable because they are black). Unfortunately, support for portables may have been corrupted so they were holding back on the release.
The most recently released version is 1.02
I guess we can cross our fingers and hope that we don't wind up with a very expensive paper weight if an update is not released.

Seeing as there's just one byte difference between the IDs broadcast by the 1.04 rebranded Dells and the other units, you might be able to binary-patch /empeg/bin/player and have it work with the new receivers... but patching it to work with both old and new ones might be trickier.
