I'm trying to add a dead laptop hitachi drive, the hd works fine in my new laptop but while following the upgrade guide I get following error message. It seems it has problem reading the partion any has any ideas, could I do somethings more manually to more pinpoint the error.

Did you run builder on the new drive, or build it using your laptop?

I've tried the buildier on my empeg only, tried both as a slave drive to my primary original 12gb disk as well as only primary disk.

I've even tried to make a partion on the disk before I put it in the empeg but I guess it should be unpartioned. No difference though.

Take a look at this thread. There is a suspected bug in the builder software. It might be necessary to rebuild the drives using the builder image again in order to set up the partitions. This should be for the new drive that you are adding only. Hopefully, you did not rebuild your original drive - not that it would hurt it, butyou would lose the data (music) that was on it.

I would add, though, that it looks like you are seeing physical errors. Please double check your cabling, your jumper (slave drive) and your IDE header.

I'll check it out, I've now even tried to install a full version of WinXP on the harddrive and everything works fine, just not in the player, really strange. Only thing I can think of is it use to be a security software on the hard disk on the old lap top (PointSec) if that could have leaved traces left that empeg doesn't like.

But no traces of it on my new laptop with new os on ... I'll give it another try next weekend.

I would agree with Paul. You're definitely seeing physical problems. The lines that contain "hda: read_intr: error=" are the clue.

As he says, double check your cabling. Have a close look at the IDE header on the main board, to make sure that it's not pulled away. Double check that you've got the cable on properly (it's easy to get laptop cables on incorrectly). Also double-check that you've got the drive jumpered correctly.

The fact that the drive works fine in a Windows XP machine strongly suggests to me that it's a cabling fault.

Once you can connect the drive without seeing any "read_intr" error lines, then try the builder again. As Paul says, sometimes it doesn't work, so try it twice. Alternatively, you could use my instructions for partitioning and formatting your new drive, but they're not for the faint-hearted.
