Ok, here's a strange one.

I have about 10 presets on my empeg. 8 are FM stations, 2 are AM.

One only 1 of the station - the empeg seems to have a mind of it's own and will randomly tune to a different station.

Any ideas?

Sounds like bad RDS data coming from that station. Make sure that RDS features such as TA and AF are turned off from the main menu. See if that fixes it.

I've played around with the TA and AF settings. Turning them both to off and on. No affect.

Are these settings radio mode specific, or station specific?

No, you should just be able to turn them off.

No one else has reported it. Sure it only happens on the one station?

Yeah, it only happens on one station - that's what's so strange.

I at least have a similar problem with auto-tuning:
On various (not all) stations, my empeg tunes from the current (perfect reception) frequency of a station to another (almost always near zero reception) frequency of that station. Sometimes that later frequency is actually used by a different station.

Let me explain that last bit, even though it hasn't got much to do with the actual problem: Station A is currently received on frequency Y, but reports other frequencies of that station to be X (located a bit west of the current sender) and Z (located in the east). My empeg tunes to X, but I am on the east side of the current sender, where a sender is sending station B on frequency X.

sven

I've read something about auto tuning and the empeg before - how it would find the "strongest signal for a particular station".

This would be a great feature, if it worked as designed.

I have a feeling that is what is happening in my case, the frequency I listen to a station on is reporting another frequency which may be used in a different region - but in the region I am in the different frequency is actually a different station.

I wonder if there is a way to tell the empeg to "ignore" the other frequencies for a particualr station and just stay fixed on the frequency I have selected (isn't that the way 99% of radios work?).

Or... I suppose the other way around it which may be easier to accomplish would be to disable the auto tuning feature.

Via RDS alternate frequency tuning, a feature of radio networks in some parts of the world that doesn't exist in the USA. FAQ entry is here.

It looks like someone at the station in Los Angeles 89.9 is probably playing around with RDS alternate frequency tuning. They just recently (past 6-12 months) started playing with the call sign feature. Instead of scrolling text information at the bottom of the radio info screen they are "scrolling" text using the call sign area of the info screen... I have a feeling they have activated the alternate frequency tuning feature.

On another NPR station in the area, 89.3, they are using RDS to broadcast time as well as text which displays at the bottom of the radio info screen. They are not broadcasting the station's call letters. This station does not have the auto tuning problem.

Is there a way to make the empeg "ignore" all or some RDS data, such as alternate frequency tuning, if that is what is going on here?

In theory, simply turning off the RDS-AF feature is all that should be needed, like I said at the top of this thread. But you said that didn't work, so I have no idea what's wrong.
