According to the instructions for the AIW9800 you still connect it to the line in on your sound card. You connect the breakout box to the A/V in on the videocard then there is another cable that connects to A/V out on the videocard. That cable has a jack that you connect to the line in on a soundcard.

I have my empeg connected to the Line In on my sound card using one of these. However, my sound card happens to be a digital 6 channel integrated into the motherboard, and the sound is much improved when I stream my mp3s from it to Winamp. The audio remains in digital form all the way to the speakers, rather than being converted to analog and then back to digital again. This can be done with Mark Lord's multiuseful Hijack. You'll find a link to it at the top of any page on this BBS.

If your ATI video recording software has what's called a "monitor out", allowing you to hear and see the output of whatever it's trying to record on its AV inputs, then yes that should work. You'll probably have to stare at a blank video playback window at the same time, but oh well.

I think what everyone is wondering is why you don't just use your sound card's line input?

Will those video-card audio inputs not show up in the Audio Control Panel as audio inputs? I'd think they would, but, then, I'm always surprised at the things ATI driver developers do.

Okay, then it's clear you're going about it all wrong.

You shouldn't need anyone to help, just plug the empeg into your sound card's line input, not the video card's A/V inputs. As was said before, this is done with this cable.

If you don't know where your sound card's line input is, you should look at the manual that came with your computer. Sometimes the sound card is built in to the computer and it isn't a separate card. In that case, the line input will be one of the 1/8" plugs near the keyboard and USB inputs on the back of the computer. It will probably have a symbol that looks like this:

(((<-)))-

Odds are, your speakers are plugged in very near to it. The speakers are probably plugged into an output which has a symbol looking like this:

(((-)))->

Once you have it plugged it in, you turn up the empeg to 0db volume, and use the sound applet in windows (it will be a little speaker icon in your task bar) to adjust the volume of the "line in".

...and if your PC/soundcard is fairly new (i.e. since the PC99 spec), the Audio Line-In socket should be light blue in colour.
