In spite of you losing your job and cutting the top off your thumb, I'm inclined to agree with you

Seriously though, I hope the thumb heals well and that you find a new job soon
I've just taken it apart and other than a reverse polarity diode, there's no rectifier arrangement that I recognise.
What's odd though, apart from the 5VAC on the underside, is that it doesn't have the usual legend indicating the input polarity like most AC adapter-fed devices.
I'd still welcome comments from any WET11 owners, especially if they could put a DVM across the adaptor's outputs to confirm it's really DC.
