Hypnotically question.
Lets say you fell into a forced quantum singularly and ended up in bazarro world where everything is just like here except there are no Empeg player.
If there were no such thing as an Empeg what would you use in your car to play MP3 files?
There are a ton of mp3’s players, and an ever-growing list of hard drive based mp3 players so which one would you use?
Ok yes I am bored but its still a good question,
On a side note anyone remember that Russian MP3, player that was posted here a few years ago?? I can’t find the web link or remember the name.

I think (ans this is what I might wind up doing since my empeg is no more) I would use a PC based trunk setup. A small touch-screen monitor in front and a very well cooled tower in the trunk. I would have to do a lot of work to ensure that the unit booted quickly, but all in all I think it's a viable option.

Greetings!
If the Karma was around, that would be my option, probably through a (rather pathetic) tape deck or RF interface.

If the empeg weren't around, I would have LONG since built my own in-car computer for the task. I was itching to do that when I discovered the empeg. This is pre-Neo and pre-Phatnoise of course.
I don't know if I'd have gone for a Neo or a Phatnoise in the absence of an empeg. Hm. Probably would have, if there were no other alternatives.
Nowadays, it would be a Karma and an aux-in adapter. If the Karma weren't around, it would be an iPod and an aux-in adapter.

Without the empeg I would have stuck with talk radio and let all my CDs collect dust. I don't know if I ever would have come around to mp3 or not; not by this point anyway.

this is what I might wind up doing since my empeg is no more I'm hoping that by the time my empeg is no more (and there are no posts in the FS section), there will be a better non-empeg alternative to the current non-empeg alternatives, and I'll go with that.
Had I never discovered the Empeg, I probably would not be using mp3s at all.

Although I never bought an Empeg I would never have got into mp3 if I hadn't discovered it

As far as one of my cars is concerned, the empeg doesn't exist. So I use my Karma and one of those tape dohickeys

Well I'd probably go for a Dension unit for the car. Karma is nice and all, but i'd prefer a proper car unit.

I'd probably go for a -dare I say it?- Phatnoise. Of all the other existing soluting I think this is the best one. I especially like the way it integrates with standard HU's. Ok, so this is immediately also it's weakest point because that limits it's functionality, but I still think it's the best way to go.
Because I'm taking into account that within +/- the next 5 years there will probably be NO more new cars produced that support a proper DIN slot (it's already a becoming a pain to find one now). They'll all have their proper "standard" HU installed.
I think that's a good evolution for theft protection, but little else, especially not for audiophiles.

I was already on my 3rd incarnation of my home-brewed carputer when the empeg firesale hit. In my head I figured out how much money and time I'd spent on a 5 1/4" SBC, an 8.4" VGA lcd with touchscreen, gps, DC-DC power supply, etc.. and realized I'd be a complete moron not to buy one. That quickly grew to 3. I've since sold off all of my old carputer stuff.
Nowdays, the carputer route is more attractive than back then with the ready availablity of the small ITX boards and 7" touchscreen VGA LCDs for relatively cheap prices. The various software efforts have come a long way too. If I didn't have my empegs, I'd still be going that route.

If I hadn't bought the empeg, I'm pretty sure I'd still be using the cassette player that came installed from the factory (and that I used for the first 5 years of owning that car). I still make compilation tapes (compiling them as empeg playlists, of course) for minibus journeys (but then, sound quality is not a major consideration in a DAF 17-seater).
