Forcing a power down while on DC. Can it be done?

It appears that the newer monsoon wiring no longer has an Ignition Sense Input wire (thanks VW!). Is there ANY way to force a full powerdown other then removing the player?

What about setting standby timeout to 1 second. Once you put it in standby it'll almost instantly power down.

It would. That timer is used for how long the player stays live when the ignition sense goes down.
I do not know of a way to do it in software, if you have no ignition sense lead. What might be possible is to rig your own igition sense by connecting your player's ignition sense input to a physical switch or button as part of your install. That way, turn off the switch or button and your simulated ignition sense goes down.

Paul's right. If there's no ignition sense wire on the factory stereo harness, then you must rig your own. There are plenty of other things in the car which turn on and off with the ignition, there's gotta be something you can tap into.
Once upon a time, Volkswagens didn't have ignition sense wires for their radios. Then they added them, I forget what year it was. I'm surprised to hear they're going back to the old method, I wonder why? Are you sure there's no ignition sense wire on the harness, or is it just that the wiring is different on your ISO plug (a known issue with VWs)?

Does the Mk2 need to have its ignition line powered in order to work? If not, lop it off. You'd probably have to wake it up in the car every time you used it though.
EDIT: I'm assuming you've got both ignition and memory tied to permanent 12v at the moment...

I think this should be doable in software, but I'm (myself) not really in the mood to figure it out right now. Should be doable, though, since the regular "power off" is a software function already.

Oh, here it is:
EMPEG_POWER_TURNOFF ioctl to the empeg_power driver.
Just need a 10-line C program to invoke it now, and then bind it to the hijack menu at poweron (once I finish implementation of the menu feature..)

Yeah, that works.
But you'd still need to rig a trigger for it, in which case you might as well rig up an ignition sense line instead.

Thanks for all the replies.
All of my research, it seems (at least on the R32) there is no ignition sense line. Looks like I'm going to have to remove everything (by god it was a bitch to stuff everything in there in the first place) and run a wire from the fuse box. If i can find the ignition sense; rumored to have something at the fuse box, I can tap into it for that. If not, I will bury a switch under the dash.
I really want to sick an angry mob of midgets armed with Hormel summer sausages on the individuals responsibe for the engineering of the whole monsoon system.

I'm a bit confused. What does the factory radio do when you turn the car off? Keep playing?
If I remember correctly, didn't older VWs allow you to turn the radio on without the ignition on (as if they didn't have ignition sense), but with the igntion on they'd still turn off when the ignition turned back off?

I think manufacturers are slowly adding these as software commands. For example, my Saab no longer has a headlight dimmer wire. After investigating this awhile I'm pretty sure that the dim commands come thru the CAN Bus to the radio. I'll bet an on board computer is telling the radio when the car is turned on.

Did you get this resolved yet?
FWIW, I've checked the vortex but didn't find any mention of this problem. I assume that you remembered that VW color the permanent +12V and igntion +12V opposite to everyone else - if you didn't you need to swap them.

It's resolved, got the part and 'added a circuit' to the wipers.
Both lines had 12V regardless. Car on, off, key removed. They changed the wiring again. I found out about that tidbit on VWVortex. Now I just need the right Blue or Red Lens to match the dash lights.....

Practice your search-fu. A long time ago I posted a .jpg that if inkjet-printed onto an overhead transparency will give a near perfect match to VW blue. Unfortunately it kills the brightness somewhat - I ended up just using a smoked lens instead. The green that results contrasts the red/blue dash nicely IMO.

I was going to pick up a red lens (although it looks a little darker then the VW red), I'll also pick up a smoke if it looks nice.
