I bought one of those things that you put into the tape player in your car and plug the other end into a portable audio device over the weekend to try and connect my Karma to my car.

It sounded rubbish. But I tinkered with the parametric EQ settings on the Karma and I've got it sounding pretty damn good now.

Not as good as having an empeg in the car, but certainly the next best thing. And it only cost me 15 quid.

I've actually been pretty impressed with my wife's FM modulator to do the same thing. As I've said before, not quite good enough for me to use all the time, but for our last three hour road trip it was much better than messing with CDs.

What kind of head unit have you got? You can get an adaptor to plug things like walkman's into the CD autochanger port on most (not mine).

It's in a Lexus and is one of those designed for the car jobbies

You can just about see it here:

No CD autochanger port as it is an in-dash 6-CD autochanger.

I've got an FM modulator and a fag lighter adaptor in the pocket of my empeg bag just in case I have to slum it in a hire car. It works very well as long as you tune it properly.

At the moment I've got the Karma plugged into the AUX in on my Sony Headunit, sounds really good, if not a little quiet, I have to run the volume at 28 to get it anything like.

The Karma sits neatly in the tray under the headunit in the Smart. This is only a temp pre-empeg solution. A custom Dash-Facia is currently being made (by myself).

Although the incar Karma is an easy solution, I'm a fiddler and probably only listen to about 5% of my tracks in full, I spend most of the time skipping tracks or adding new ones, I can't do that very well while driving with the Karma, with the empeg it's easy.

And I think the empeg still has more cool factor

Cheers

Cris.

The empeg is due to be fitted in my other car after Easter by Cambrige Car Audio. I've been without it for over a year now and am having withdrawl symptoms.

Cambs Car Audio did look at fititng it to the Lexus but it would mean purchasing an amp, replacing all the speakers (at least the rears) and rewiring the whole car. I didn't like the sound of my new car being pulled apart

No CD autochanger port as it is an in-dash 6-CD autochanger

Surely, the HU and the autochanger are sourced by Lexus and are:
a. from one of the major manufacturers.
b. two separate units, linked behind the dashboard by an input cable.
Just a thought

It isn't 2 separate units, it's a double-din headunit that combines 6-cd autochanger, tape and radio. I've had it apart and there are no ports on the back. I'm still not sure how it manages to hold 6 CD's in there and shuffle them about.

You could cut it down the middle with a hacksaw

Different adapters give different results FWIW. I've heard that Sony's version is one of the better ones.

Personally I would never use anything other than an aux in, which you can find on quite a wide range of head units.

I just used a FM modualtor with the Karma in a rentsl in Dallas, Tx for a week. It worked OK, and was not my empeg, but it still was better than commercial radio...
