Follwed the upgrade guide word for word. Everything seems to have gone along properly, but when I try to connect to the player with Emplode it gives the following error and stops:

"Download Failed while Rebuilding Database - Error 0xc0041002"

Here's what my Hyperterminal log looks like during bootup:

Okay. The boot logs look a little scrambled, but from what I am guessing:

a) you had a single 30GB drive
b) you are adding an 80GB drive
c) you built the 80GB drive
d) you tried hooking the two drives up and tried to copy the files

At only one point in all of the boot logs do I see a 30GB drive. The rest of it is all 80GB.

With the 30GB disconnected, try syncing one mp3 file to the new 80GB. Verify that works first.

If that works, reconnect the 80 and 30. Boot. Do not use emplode, drop directly to shell. Force everything to read/write and try your copy again. Does that copy work / any errors?

If the copy works, you now have duplicate material on both drives. Again disconnect the 30 and try booting from the 80 only. Check to see that all your music was copied. If that works...

Reconned the 30. Boot, ignoring any errors. In shell, go into the 30 and delete everything from the fids directory. Only do this after testing that everything was copied to the 80 first!!! With the fids directory empty, reboot and resync.

If you tried to put in a second hard disk, it's not finding it.... Were there supposed to be two hard disks?

This was a factory 60gb player, I'm replacing only the second drive with an 80gb drive. I removed both original 30gb drives and put the new 80gb drive in. Ran the builder and then ran 2.0 b13 developer (this is what was on tje player to start with and is still the software on the original 30gb drive0 I plan to put back in). Tried to start the player in Emplode and got this error. re-booted the player a few times and tried again, same thing. Re-installed the builder just in-case and then re-installed 2.0 b13 too. Still the same problem. Then attached the old drive1 and made and attempt to copy the fids from that drive assuming the error had no significance. the copy happend in a blink of an eye. Way to short for nearly 30gb of fids to transfer. I knew that didn't work so I re-booted the player with both drives attached and it started rebuilding database... I went to bed. This morning tried to run Emplode and nothing happened. removed the old drive1 and tried, still nothing. That's when I posted this thread asking for help. I've just tried to upgrade to 2.0 final but for some reason the player still thinks it's b13. Confused.. I am?

Paul, I can't sync one song because I can't start Emplode. It crashes with the 30gb attached or not.

Okay. So you have two original 30s. 30m (master) and 30s (slave). You also have a new 80.

Try this:
Remove all drives.
Install the 80.
Install and run the builder.
Install 2.0b13 (or whatever final version you want)
Verify the 80 by syncing 1 file to it.

If that works:
Install your original 30m as the slave. You will need to change the jumper.
Boot - you will see database errors.
Go to shell.
cd /drive1/fids
ls
You should either see lots of files (pre-fidsift) or a bunch of _directories (post-fidsift)
If you have files (pre-fidsift):
cp /drive1/fids/* /drive0/fids
If you have directories (post-fidsift):
cp -R /drive1/fids/* /drive0/fids
shutdown
Remove 30m and install 30s, being careful about the jumper
Reboot
Resync / rebuild databases & test.

If all went well, your 80 is now master, your original 30s is the slave drive, you should have (nominally) 110GB capacity and all of your files should be there. You also have your old 30m sitting on your desk, for whatever use you choose.

EDIT: Also, be aware of a potential builder bug that has popped up from time to time.

Yeah see, that's the problem. I did remove all the old drives and install just the 80gb. Then I ran the builder and then 2.0b13. It won't allow me to get into emplode to sync anything, it crashes at "Downlaod Failed while Rebuilding Database - Error 0xc41002" and then I have to close Emplode. I also tried to re-install the builder and 2.0b13 just incase the first time it didn't work and got the same thing. that's when I started jacking around with the old drives to see if I could get anything else to happen. Basically, with the new 80gb drive installed, Emplode crashes and I'm done.

See my edit on the previous message. That sounds like the potential builder bug. Try rebuilding the 80, and capture a log of what happens.

Ok, I think my impatience has bitten me once again. I realized by reading pauls post about the "builder bug" that I hadn't really allowed the player to completely reboot and rebuild after applying the disk builder upgrade. So I re-ran the builder and let it completely reboot/rebuild afterwards and ran the stress test for a few minutes. Now all seems to be fine.

However, I do have a quick question. I was interested in making the new 80gb my slave or drive1 and keeping my original 30gb master/drive0 as the master/drive0. Basically to maintain the dynamic data, config.ini, etc... Anyway, going off the Drive Upgrade instructions and the info in Pauls previous 2 posts, I'm going to follow the guidelines for copying the info from one drive to another except I am going to copy the fids from my old slave/drive1 to the new 80gb and then put my original 30gb drive back in as the master and move the 80 to the secondary position with proper jumper and so on. This will accomplish what I want, RIGHT?

Greetings!

Exactly. Because the 80 was built and has the OS on it, it can act as either master or slave. If you:

a) boot with your 80 as master and your original 30s as slave
b) copy the fids from your 30s to the 80
c) reconnect your original 30m as master, 80 as slave
d) reboot, resync

you should get exactly what you want. Better, because your original database files will be intact on the original master drive, and you should not (in theory) even have to rebuild the database. Best to do so anyway, just in case.

Edit: for the sake of sanity, you may want to delete the following files from the 80GB drive. This way, you do not have an old / invalid copy of the database on /drive1...

/drive1/var : config.ini, database, playlists, tags
/drive1/var itself

Good, fids are copying as I type. It'll probably take a while since both original 30gb drives were full to capacity. I've got 3 other players to upgrade after this one, so now they should all go smoothly . Thanks for the help!

No worries! What are your plans for the old 30GB drives you are removing?

And 2.0 final is a good idea, unless there is something specific that you need from b13 - I think there was a tuner bug of some sort, but I do not remember off hand.

Well, during the whole ordeal this morning, I reattached the original master/slave combo and did the 2.0 final upgrade, so that's done. Then when I rebuilt the new 80gb I put 2.0 on it too. I'm a 2.0 final guy now (looking forward to crossfade).

The extra 30gb drives (3 total) are going into other players:

50gb player (10gb + 40gb) will now be 70gb (30gb + 40gb)
10gb player will now be a 60gb (30 + 30)

This will yeild a nice team of Empegs 2@ 110gb, 1@ 70gb, 1@ 60gb, 1@ 30gb, 1@ 20gb (this one is the wife's)

Hahahahaha! Your wife gets the smallest player!?!? Okay... After seeing all the SWMBO references, I guess it is your life at risk...

As to crossfade, uh, that's actually the 3.0 alphas...

Damn... I was looking forward to crossfade, Oh well.

As far as the wife's Empeg being smallest... I think for her SWMBO should be SWMBTTUTEWGF (She who must be tought to use the Empeg without getting frustrated). I only regret the size of her player when I drive her car and want to hear my own music.

That's..... quite an upgrade farm right there. I always love trickling down hardware to other computers. Out of bean-counting curiousity (no reply necessary, really), what did you have to start with and how did you get to the end point? What a stash of empegs right there!

Believe it or not, there's one more, it's my brothers so I didn't bother mentioning it. It's an orig 30gb and I'm putting an 80gb in it for him and stealing his old 30gb drive for myself

I got them for 194.03 @ zipzoomfly.com (used to be googlegear.com), I wouldn't say I stole them, but it wasn't bad.
